Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread
Sep 2, 2011 at 1:18 AM Post #4,276 of 46,554
I remember reading that the HD 650s are bad for rock music, but I've been listening to some soft rock and it sounds good to me so far. Could anyone recommend a piece of music that is really bad for the HD 650? Something that sounds at its worst for these particular headphones? I want to hear it because I'm kind of curious to hear what the HD 650s don't do well.

Bad for rock is another myth perpetuated by those who haven't truly heard these cans. I'm listening to At the Drive In's Relationship of Command at the moment. The attack and energy is there, and the guitars are appropriately aggressive with bite and texture. Veiled? Lol!

I've never heard or read people say the HD 650s are bad for rock. I think you're confusing them with some other headphones. I remember reading people say the HD 600s and HD 650s are good for rock, but the HD 600 is better.

None of my music sounds bad with the HD 650s. But that's just me. Maybe metal?

That's weird, I can't seem to find that info either. Searching reveals a lot of people saying they're quite good actually. I'm not sure where I got that impression then.

I think maybe it was due to a bunch of posts saying that Grados are "better" at rock in my what-should-I-buy thread where some people recommended Grados and I was asking about the differences. I also don't remember anyone saying the HD 650s sound bad with anything, but just that some things they sound "mediocre", so maybe I asked using the wrong words.

metal's great for me, strong midrange and takes some of the edge of the badly produced treble nicely.

Negatives for the HD650 are all myths.

Agreed :)
The better your amp & source, the better your HD650 will sound (imo)
Ofcourse if you're not looking for that soundsignature or if you like something far more analytical, you will probably say it doesn't sound good for rock/metal/jazz or whatever

It's practically the only headphone I still use at home. It's simply great and I love it.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being un-amped, and 10 being the best dac/amp setup possible for the HD 650's, where would you rate the NFB-12 as a dac/amp for the HD650?

Would it be a good combination to get a BCL + MSII+ to power these headphones for the money? If not, what other DAC should I get?

whats the best amp for the 650's ?

The 3 amps I use are a GS-1, a Rockhopper M^3 and a Woo 3.  The GS-1 is by far the best of the group.  The 637/627 M^3 and the Cetron tubed Woo 3 have extremely similar sound signatures and are hard to tell apart.  If I had to choose between the two, I'd choose the M^3.  Tubes burn out and deteriorate from the moment you plug them in and Jack Woo told me that it's not a good idea to leave the amp on for more than 8 hrs at a time.  No such problems with accidentally leaving the M^3 on.  The case doesn't even get warm to the touch.  In it's favor, my Woo 3 has a pre-amp out like the GS-1.
