Every peak is annoying.

Not to everyone.  We all hear differently.

I have no problem with the HD800 and the 6K peak though I know many do...

that's pretty right.

650/600= great vocals (with the right amp)
560 = fabulous chamber, solo pianos, jazz, some rock, acoustic
a good floor system = great classical, imaging, soundstage, and everything else

haven't yet heard the 800 -- is it as bright up top and lean on sub-bass as some claim?

My new 800 has the SDR mod installed, not finding it very bright at all but depends on the recording. If the recording is bright, then it will be bright and I prefer my 650. Some of my older black and goth metal albums sound better on my 650.

Personally I find the bass on the 800 pretty great. A tiny less amount of mid-bass compared to 650 but better extension and better clarity/less distortion.

My 800 is still new so my impressions are still evolving. So far I'm really enjoying it.

Betcha you'll sell it for something else....maybe the Elear?

The only headphone safe from the selling block has been and always will be my 650. However if I decide to ever sell my 800, it would probably not be for the Elear, had too many faults in its FR for a 650 fan like me.

I am extremely interested in the two new dynamics coming from Zach at ZMF.

I'm no stranger to extremely high end home and pro audio. Have had my HD650's for about two weeks now. Love the clarity in the midrange but I'm not a huge fan of the lifeless frequency response. Downloaded Equalizer APO today and played with the response a little. These headphones are great if you reshape the response. For the price, these are a bargain if you're good with an EQ.

Can someone recommend a simple-to-use EQ download, for Mac OSX?

You can use Soundflower, which is the same as VB Audio Cable for Windows. The people over at Sonarworks have a short tutorial on how to set up a system wide plugin with Pedalboard, and it's pretty simple. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeWUv6g8K20

Edit: I use ToneBoosters EQ plugin, you can find a VST version of it for Mac. Here's a link for that: http://www.toneboosters.com/download/

I hope the Alpha Prime is also the king of classical as I just upgraded my Alpha Dog. Complements my HD 650.

I bet you'll like the Prime with Classical.  Might be the best T50rp mod in that regard...

DOes the 2014 black box HD 650 sound different from 2012 silver box silver drivers HD 650?
