Question about amps for the Stax SR-009

  Hi,
I would like to ask about the difference between DIY T2 and Stax SRM - T2 : technical
and sound quality with Stax SR009, Orpheus

The original has hum issues due to the unregulated power supply.

other than that, sound is absolutely identical. exactly the same parts
including the xicon resistors.

mine has a whole bunch more heatsink and a fully regulated power supply.

megatron is an all tube monster, there are probably close to a dozen built
around the world.

I could do a megatron with 845's
it would weigh close to 350 lbs and consume at least 600 watts.

How much will Megatron cost? 845... That would be kinda like electrostatic Viva Egoista ?

not at all like the viva.

direct drive dc coupled. You would need 8 x 845!
and some really large filament transformers.

I don't pay attention to how much these things cost.
If I did, I would not be building them. Others that have
built them might have a better idea.

Hello Kevin

The question is: does it (the Megatron) sound better than the (your) BHSE with a SR009?

this is a very hard question to answer, and the reason why I have
so many different amplifiers.

what I now need is a bigger house.

You might also like to consider the Stax SRM-T1 valve amplifier as a vintage offering.  There were several iterations of this offering different combinations of inputs and outputs.
I'm fortunate to have one with the Stax Golden Aero valves, and to my ears sounds much better that the modern offerings except perhaps for the Stax T2.

I have the SRM T1S and SRM 006s.

Both with RCA clear tops from the 60's/70's.

The T1S is much better than the 006s, which is brighter, and has "tizzy" high frequencies.

I can not find fault with the T1S at all!  Perfection!

Can any one help me get a start on a DIY project?
I would love to build a KG amp but am a total newby in need of direction. Is there a way to PM someone who might be interested in building me a T2 or a KG design?
Thanks much for any suggestions!

I have used an original SRM T2 for many years and can say I have never experienced any hum issues at all. It did have a complete refurb when I bought it so that may be why. I have not so far heard anything that is at all comparable as a Stax amplifier, I can only describe it as simply effortless in its dynamics and sound quality.
I would love to compare it with one of Kevins' DIY T2's but as far as I know there is only one built in the UK

In the same boat, I just can't help liking an Electrostatic amplifier, any 'stat amplifier. I have now ... 16 and counting

There's something about a complete 'stereo in a (small) box' that is really compelling.
