Must be great to go 'old school' in this day and age. The D100 was fantastic and I look forward to more on this but it'd have to be seriously good to put a kink in my plans.

Nope, old school DAC style, with just three inputs total: coaxial spdif, toslink, and AES/EBU. Up to 24/192 on each of them, although Toslink is realistically limited to 24/96. It does come in black but I chose silver.

Like most of this stuff, I'll have a dedicated thread coming soon, once I have more pictures and more listening time in.

AKG K250

(Not my picture, waiting to get them at the moment. As far as their significance goes, well, there isn't much. I was browsing for some new vintage phones and got these. Apparently they're somewhat like the 240 Sextetts; and the last time I bought a pair of Sextetts, I ended up receiving a broken pair and a soiled mood. So hopefully better luck this time.)

New pads for the vintage DT990

(Significant in the sense that the vintage 990s are my most favorite phones ever, and I've been meaning to give them new pads ever since I got them a year ago.)

I have both a Realistic Pro50 (a rebadged K250) and the K240 Sextett LP.

The Pro50/K250 is physically larger and seems to have a little more bass energy, but otherwise they sound very similar. If you've been wanting K240 Sextetts, I think you'll be happy with these.

The cup size on the K 250/Pro 50 is indeed something I find very interesting.

The Pro 50 apparently always has the full Sextett driver assembly (with the passive diaphragms), but the K 250, according to Fitz, may sometimes be missing the passive diaphragms (possibly versions of it made in the early 1980s when AKG was testing the sound port thing?). In any case, the cup design on both versions has obviously ditched the Sextett motif and follows instead that of the K 340 (which I believe was introduced in 1978, while the Pro 50 came out in late 1979 I think). In addition to the cups, the K 250/Pro 50 contain other clear aesthetical cues from the K 340 (headband and the side panel things).

In essence, one might suggest the K 250/Pro 50 to be a dynamic person of the K 340, rather than simply a Sextett variant. (Which, acoustically, might very well be close to the Sextett sound anyways.)

(Of course, I don't own the K 340 and have no idea whether the 340 and 250 cups are similar in their actual physical properties.)

If your coming K250 was built without Sextett passive radiators, then it may be using the venting designed for the K240 DF, which is itself a desirable thing. As long as the phones are in good condition I don't think you'll be disappointed. I doubt they'll sound like the K340 because I've never heard anything that sounds quite like those. The K340 uses electrets for tweeters and, in keeping with AKG's tradition of making hard-to-power flagship headphones, are complete beasts to drive. The K240/250 will sound good with pretty much anything that can handle 600 ohm input impedance.

Oh yes, the K 340 are a different thing considering the K 250/Pro 50 are purely dynamic phones. My comparing the K 250 to the K 340 was an attempt at figuring out where AKG were coming from with the K 250 - i.e. why the K 250 has such notable elements from the K 340 in it. After all, AKG pretty much copied the Sextett cup design for their Philips N6330 version (as well as the Uher version, judging from some blurry pictures), so I wonder about the motivation for suddenly making a Sextett for RadioShack that's using K 340-esque cups (which are notably bigger than the K 240 ones, and I assume would present a different acoustical environment for the drivers).

Questions like these are what I find interesting about the K 250. I was planning on doing some sort of write-up on this model at some point after I've received them, seeing as the information on them is very scattered and sparse.

As far as the K 250's sound is concerned, I do most of my listening on earbuds due to comfort reasons.

I won't be too disappointed if my K 250s aren't terribly good in that sense.

Srry for the bad image quality, the color's are grey, dark grey, white and teal/green, not sky blue an the darkish purple in the image.
