Fiio X1
Topping NX1
AudioTechnika Cks77
JDS short cable
Moded case.
Mising some warmer sounds and bass, but overall not a bad rig for my first one

Whats the white substance that little baggie in the background?

how about a sub $75 budget-fi system? i have several more expensive cumbersome and uncomfortable headphones but my Koss ksc75 with the parts-express headband are my current favorite. Also my Rockbox modded Sansa clip sounds better (IMHO) and was MUCH cheaper than my 3rd gen ipod nano.

A $35 4GB Clip+ and a $14 Sandisk 32GB Class 4 card  and a $12 Soundmagic ES18.  Seems like the best way to spend $61. Under $75 for everything is imo what budget is. In the 90s I used to spend $100+ for a walkman tape player, and around $40 for earphones. Adjusting for inflation that would be equivalent to over $225 today.

Sorry but I don't know where to post this and I can't find a clear answer.

Should I buy rockboxed iPod classic or a Fiio X1? How good are those 2 devices?

If you could point me to another thread with more info it would be nice. Thanks in advance!

Grab the iPod if you already use iTunes and/or have another iDevice.
Grab the X1 otherwise. Cheaper, better SQ (supposedly), etc etc. I'd go for the iPod because of above reason.

The ipod is great rockboxed ( must be 5th or 5,5 gen for stable release ) However, it has a rather high output impedance and does not match well with some iems. Also the amp is not that powerful for something more demanding. Let´s say the Havi B3. Line out sounds great though and paired up with an c-moy or a topping nx1 sounds very good and have plenty of power.

my TDK ie800, havi B3 does not sound good out of the ipod. Havi needs more power, and the TDK ie800 is only 10 ohms so the output impedance is to high. The sandisk sana fixes this problem and sounds much better.. Still not 100%

The ipod Classic has a hard drive, while the Fiio X1 has flash memory. I would not want to own a player that uses a hard drive. Hard drives are quite vulnerable to shock and vibration. I don't need to have all my music with me at all times. My favorite 25% of the music I own normally gets over 85% of my listening when all is available, so as long as I can have at least 25% of my music library with me I am happy.
