New Stuff!
Everyone: If you remember a few months back I found someone developing new Planar Magnetic headphones. Well if you are attending the upcoming CanJam '09 in LA you will be lucky enough to see them for their world unveiling and have a chance to demo them.

I really hope someone does and reports back to us here in the thread.
The Company is called Audeze, and they will be at Catalina 2B. There should be some guys called Alex and Sankar running the stand. Say hello to em for me (and a shout out to the ortho thread!) if you get a chance to go there!

I am not sure if I am allowed to post the website and all the details yet....
What the heck I'll post the specs and blurb, it is free advertising after all

Kabeer,

Thank you very much for posting this.

We really look forward to your opinions about our headphones and meeting all of you enthusiast.

Any reason for this secrecy - personally I think it is an anti-marketing strategy especially when your debut is at a show which will be launching the PS1000 and HD800 - most people are very excited about standing for hours just to get a glimpse of them , your product has this shroud of anonymity and considering this forum will represent your primary audience from headfi, we know very little about it.

I am assuming that there is a completed product, how else would you derive such great specs , and yes, I am being a little tongue in cheek but I think justifiably so considering the sparsity of information that you have shared.

Any pictures, any design philosophies ? frank retribution

ps welcome to headfi

I wonder what the heck they mean by "No steel used for magnetic return path".

Also would be nice to know the precise thickness and composition of the diaphragm.

Sometimes steel or other conductive material is used to close the magnetic path. These cause eddy current issues. The design we have avoids this problem.

The model we are showing at CanJam will have a 5 micron thick diaphragm.

This is 5 micron without the coil, what is the thickness of the voice coil? Also do you guys have any pictures of these headphones and ball park price? I am very exited to see new isodynamic headphone on the market.

Best of luck at the show - I am sure you will convert many to the planar philosophy. Also thank you for taking on such an enormous task, we have all dabbled in the conversation regarding making new planars but to have a new company with the drive to take them to production is great.

I will have to wait for folk to post images of their experiences as I will not be attending ..dB

Just wanted to post some more information on the headphone.

This is our first attempt at making this and we have tried to create these within our limited means. We took an off the shelf open dynamic headphone and removed innards. Designed our planar magnetic driver to fit exactly into this existing headphone. (i.e. we made the transducer, but the headband and cups are from some other headphone ).

The diaphragm is 5 micron thick and the conductive traces on top are 5 micron thick as well. The traces cover more than 80% of the area. It is a push-pull design (i.e. magnets are on both sides of the diaphragm).

We will have a couple of small amplifiers (within our means :) and two working models. we plan to have one on the table and the other one can be taken around so people can listen to them with their own equipment.

As I mentioned in the other thread, we are just starting this. We hope we can get some great feedback from CanJam.

You mentioned in the other thread that you will be selling the transducers separately = this is very exciting for our DIY inclined mentality.

Care to share any details of the dimensions of the driver - shape , thickness, tab position ...... ( may have mentioned this already but a picture is worth a thousand words
wink.gif
)

I see on your web page you list the impedance as a range - 20 to 50 ? is this for different models , different sizes ? .... too many questions ..dB

Hey guys, I can't wait to hear your stuff. For us ortho fetishists, this is truly as exciting as the hd800 or ps1000 launches. Hope you don't mind if I bring some older orthos by to test head-to-head against your stuff. I am in SF now hanging with the gang but I will be down in LA tomorrow. Really really curious to see what you guys cooked up.
