... after some listening to the RT-10, I'd say this mod is most useful if you find that the treble is ok, but that you just need to get stronger bass / deeper bass extension.
In comparison, if I instead close the baffle, then bass goes up as well, but then treble is reduced quite a bit.

What pads are those and how do you find them?

Is there any difference between Silver and Black ТДС-15?

BMF is correct, but there are also some that are tuned a bit warmer. I think the ones you see currently up that have the gold lettering with the gold circles ( both silver and black ) are the same maker ( I can't confirm) just different colour, because they have the exact same markings.

The silver ones with the gold dots are tuned higher than the other black ones I have that have white lettering and no dots ( which are darker sounding ).

BMF would have to confirm if he has two sets with gold lettering or not.

I forget how many places made them.

I gave the gray set to my brother and don't remember what color lettering they have.

My black set has gold lettering.

I am only guessing as to variations, from what I recall in conversations and between a few other people and two sets here. It's cost prohibitive to try them all out. Maybe next year that will be a project to get all the variants.

Pads not had to replace any yet luckily, But if the stock are not overly hard you can restuff them and secure them back down with contact cement., one on ebay has that done and it looks like  new pads. Then theres no guesswork involved and sound stays exactly " like comrade artist intend "

This silver set had that done also and it is top notch still.

=>>>I just looked and the Senn HD25 pads i used on the HOK80v2 a few pages back seem like the same diameter, similar inner opening, BUT twice as high easily. However much softer :)
Not sure how the distance would affect the sound, or also the clamping force on them, depends how bad or good they are for you already.

I'd try it but if I take these glued on stock things off here they might be a pian to put back or get ruined.

  Is that an 890 stand :) ?

It is :)
The HP-890 was a nice can (I have had two of them), but the plastic/build is inferior - it cracks and falls apart, much like the Denon D1100. (I still have an intact HP-910 though that I use now and then)
The RT-10 is superior in every way compared to both the Phillips (both of them)  and the Denon (including deep bass response). It is a very articulate headphone, highlighting nuances and texture.

My driver on one side died on those 890 finally last year. Not sure what I did with the spare... IF I can find it in my scrounging of parts bins and it is in decent shape I will let you know you can just have it.

Back to SFI drivers.
Have some open backed ones I got tuned up nicely in the low end, but want to bump a bit of the high end( kinda odd with an SFI hey ).
I searched through for "SFI Micropore " and found very little of use.
Micropore either applied directly to the rear side of special felt-material discs, or on front, or combos  is my preferred method for bringing highs and especially detail forward. If done right it adds something magical to the vocals as well.

So question is, since bass runs through the middle hole, how many of the outer ring of holes would be best, was thinking 3 of the 6 outer holes.

Be really great to limit openings of this thing, just curious about past experiences, even though every damping and shell is different.
Basically is 6 done too much and 3 the magic starter number?

I'll likely try it = 3 and then less anyhow

YES DAC I just looked and found the 890 working driver and tested to confirm. PM me if you want it. If you still have any that is. BTW mine never cracked:)

For experiments sake you could cut out two thin plastic discs with the SFI hole pattern in each and then mount them one on top of the other. By rotating the discs you could close off any number of holes or parts thereof.

oh interesting idea. Like a variable tuner also.
Might work that into another older rebuild.

  ericj,

In my country Superlux HD330 costs 40$, it's real bergain for mods like mine. It is not bad quality as a headphones frame. I've ordered velour pads, because stock is made of cheap pleather. Beyerdynamic and Hifiman fits OK. One important note is that Superlux headband size is a bit smaller/shorter than Beyerdynamic typical one. And if you have a big head You need to be aware. Me I did some mod and now it fits perfectly and the sides move much further than stock lengths.

What rear dampening od drivers do you use, if any ?

So i dug out my sansuis tonight.

It looks like I had just stuck them into the DT-990 cups and taped them in place.

So this time I put a layer of dense black felt against the back of the cup, then a 1/4" thick disc of some soft open cell foam. The original fiber cookie is still in place.

taped them back in, and put on superlux-grade not-quite-beyer velours. along with the foam cover discs from my hd-660.

Bright isn't the word. Hot, maybe? Even harsh. There is accuracy and even bass but the mids could come forward and the treble is too much.

The lens i seem to recall from your post makes sense. I'll try that at some point. I'll also stick something more substantial than the wispy cover foam in front of the driver to try and tame the treble.

takato14's new, and practically pornographic new toy:

  Welp. Here you go.

The photos don't do these justice, btw. This is the most beautiful headphone I've ever seen.
