Official FiiO X1 beta firmware download and discussion thread--FW1.61: added ReplayGain, and library search function
Feb 17, 2015 at 11:14 AM Post #61 of 173
After reading numerous posts and reviews about the X1 I still have an unanswered question. The main focus for my mobile player is on audio books. So I'm searching for a rock solid support of bookmarks and last position played, both in TBT books as in one file editions. It is quite unnerving to loose the position in between 200 files, if you shut your device down fast to get on or off your train.

- Does the X1 remember the last position played within a folder at all times? Even if you don't follow normal procedure, because you're in a hurry?
- Is it possible to switch to another folder or album and back without loosing it? On the train I like to read and listen to music instead. But scrolling to 1:26 of file 116 is such a time consuming task I usually shut my player down.
- How long does your X1 play nonstop? Especially on vacation I like to use my player for quite some time with no power source nearby. Does the memory card influence this? Like: the bigger the card, the shorter the runtime?

A cheap player like Sandisk's Sansa Clip with Rockbox does provide the features, but the build quality and reliability is on such unearthly lows. And costly companies like Astell & Kern offer beautiful products, but may arouse the interest of thieves as well. The X1 would be a wonderful fit between these extremes.

There is a setting for this in the X1.  Under [Music Settings]-->[Resume mode] you have to options: "Song" or "Position."  I just verified both options work with the current beta firmware by turning off the unit while a track is playing.   So the answer is yes!

Also, if you unplug your headphones the unit pauses where you left off.  It then resumes as expected from that point in the track/audio book you're listening to.

I can't verify this right now because I don't have any audiobooks loaded.  But when I get home I'll try it.  My hunch is that the X1 may not currently support switching to another track and then pick up on your original audiobook track where it left off.  The X1 would have to read the meta tags for the audiobook to know that that media type has other requirements and I just don't know if it is capable.  I'll give it a shot and let you know though.

I suppose, theoretically, a larger memory stick could cause a minuscule change in battery life.  I've seen reports of the X1 handling 12 hours of audio... non stop.  I've never had to recharge my battery while at work... and that's some 8 hours.  It's got fantastic battery life for such an inexpensive device.

Be aware, the UI is good--but it isn't iOS so it will take some getting used to if you're trying to ditch Apple's ecosystem like I am.  But I have found that for the most part I'm happy with the UI.  And I love the sound quality.

Can you delete whole folder with tracks inside? I can't:frowning2:
(i got Sandisk microsdxc 128gb in exFAT)

Yep - I just tried again.  Maybe the exFAT is the issue.

Anyway fw is 1.22beta.  Card was formatted inside the X1, and then files were copied over.  To delete, highlight folder, top left button, choose the trash symbol, click, confirm - folder (and contents gone).

I'm not saying it is exFAT that is the problem.  I'm just saying that it worked on my X1 with a card formatted originally in the player (as recommended by Fiio).  If it is exFAT causing the issue - then you have a choice.  I also have a 128Gb class 10 card in my X5 - and have zero issues using FAT32.

So it really is your choice.

I copied some AudioBooks directly to the device and as I suspected, they do not remember the last position if you go to another track and come back.  I believe there would have to be some sort of database stored on the device so it could respect the meta tag that says "Remember playback position" in iTunes.

Don't know if it's new to this firmware but found a bug.

Single flac albums with a cue sheet have a slight gap between each track even with gapless switched on.

"flac per track" albums are fine and gapless and splitting single ones removes the gap too.

Same here. I confirm, there is no gapless, when you have cue sheet in folder, even when it is turned on.

First I want to say thank you for your kind and helpful answers. A central database is used by Rockbox and it needs a long time to update. This happens in the background, so it isn't a big deal. Rockbox offers bookmarks and stores up to ten of the last recently created. Another setback: Bookmarks are exclusively available from the file browser, but they are automatically created with a lot of options to choose from.

I'm a bit old fashioned and still thinking in albums and folders, not so much in genres, moods or playlists. For me these limitations aren't a big deal, but it is certainly far from perfect. Well, perhaps the time for specialised music players are really over and I should update to a smartphone that is up to its name.

For the FIIO X1 development team

Something that really should be implemented, imho

1. A possibility to add tracks to playlist from browser, so it would be possible to add tracks "on-the-go", rather than having to play them and then add them. It would be nice to be able to add from the upper left button on the front of the player.

2. A possibility to move tracks inside a playlist, and also delete unwanted tracks from playlist. ie click on a track in the playlist, use the scrollwheel to give it a new placement in the list, and click again to leave it in the new place.

This should be a minimum of on player playlist editor possibilities.

All my best

The m3u playlist feature is great. But even if FW1.22b I'm up against the problem that some euro characters (é, ö, ç, etc.) aren't recognised on m3u playlist and can't play songs include such characters. It display the message "File not found".
I generated m3u playlist by VLC media player and edited file path to relative by text editor. Of course text encoding is UTF-8.
On the other hand, while browsing files or songs, there is no problem.

I hope this issue will fixed on next FW release.

Hey guys,

I've found a bug in the FW. I've favourited a track and then on the next day I reshuffled my library on the SD card and that track was removed. Now when I got to the favourites and go to delete the track from the list, I does not delete it from the list. Nothing I can do to remove it.

Also, one thing that really sets my OCD off is the SD card icon in the top bar. The icon should be lit as a warning/indicator that there is not card inserted, instead of the other way around. Just my 2 cents.

Cheers!

PS. I'm absolutely in love with the X1 :)
