I have to disagree with your family, because many headphones are made to be extremely loud. Take the Sennheiser HD 380 pro for example, which is advertised to produce a sound pressure level of a whopping 110 dB!
When you showed your family the set-up, did you have the volume higher than normal? If not, you might want to get an SPL monitor to test the volume that you listen at. Either your family is paranoid, or you're possibly damaging your hearing!

Quick!!!  Convert them before they catch the Beats and make a purchase before they make a purchase they may regret!!!

XD they dont buy beats. They're not headfiers but they make wise choices.

I put my Fiio e12 to around 45% - 50% only so I dont think it was that loud. They might be paranoid since im somewhat disabled. and I might get that HD 380 pro your talkin about since its that loud. lol

So true. Well, at least I'm lucky very few of the people I know actually react like that.

I finally gave up on a friend who thinks that the M40x and solo 2 sound the same

I think I'd do an experiment by getting some non-audiophile friends of mine to listen to my HD800 and K812 and see if they can discern any difference, should be interesting...

My colleague recently lamented how much he thought Bose and B&O are the pinnacle of hi-fi. Also, I work at Belden (a cable manufacturer) and my fellow colleague laughed with a sarcastic remark "is that cable made of gold or what" when I responded on the cost of my CC Piccolino. In hindsight, I shouldn't have said "yes, 1%" (-_-)
