With the HD-800 at 300 ohms and the fact that the 430HA runs pitch black silent (lack of hum) I run my HD-800 in high gain at 55 (controlling the volume as needed through the computer / Spotify etc).
Depending on an amps schematic / quality it is true that sometimes unwanted "extra noise" is introduced into the picture.... not the case with the 430HA.
Also worth mentioning is that some headphones require more current than what you may think, they run less efficiently than the specs may lead you to beleive (ie: HE-6), its in these instances also that High Gain is favoured as well as a balnced connection to take advantage of the boost in volume / juice.
Bottom line I suppose is that its all about the headphones sensitivity. Maybe give your HD-800 a try in High Gain ....see what you think.
At this level in the amp food chain "extra noise" should not be a factor ..... IMO of course.
Please try both high and low gain on relatively similar vol (44 lv on high vs 50 lv on low), and let me know if you notice any difference. I just need a second ear to help me determine.
Currently testing out my HE-1000 with high gain versus low gain.
No noticeable distortion although (might be placebo) I feel as though it's a little less thin. Not that it was to begin with, the 430HAD is a monster, but even more thick sounding. (lower volume with the higher gain to make up for the gain setting so that the perceived difference isn't due to volume)

I am not quite sure but I feel that the high gain provides extra dynamics and impact (vol matched, 44 lv on high vs 50 lv on low)!
I have no idea if this is real or just my imagination
