Maybe far ahead is a big word?

... for the price of the product. Don't forget: there is DX200, and there is more expensive DX200Ti, and some priceless Dx200CuAu! The difference not only in casing materials, but also in components used. The base schematics is the same. The sound quality is quite different.
so same rock chip too?

WM1A is better than dx220 only in two things, it doesn’t generate heat and its battery last for weeks. In aspect of sound dx220 is far ahead.

It must be so far I can't even hear it then  The only portable source I would say is far ahead is Hugo 2 and its equally far from both of them. The only problem is that I wouldnt call it clinical but it's heavy on technicalities. Its always "serious" sounding and it's never fun and playfull.

This is way too big to be portable so may not be of my interest especially when I already have its younger bro.
It may be targeted for different market but good luck!

Portability is in the hands of the user... Agree though, this for me is clearly in the transportable realm, and there is definitely a market - I for one happen to be hunting within it right now.

Its all beautiful being a reference tuning but thats not what make music to sound wonderful and enjoyable

The end of the statement missing a couple of words - "enjoyable *to me*"

No offence taken, we all just need to be mindful that our personal preferences are just that.

Already have the Kann Cube but still interested in the iBasso Max. The Max being $500 more than the Cube I would expect more from it. Going with the ES9028pro vs the ES9038pro isn't the best start in persuading possible Cube owners. I understand its not about the chip but the overall implementation but being it's $500 more I hope iBasso bring there A game on this unit.

Just to offer a perspective, if you go and watch Jude's latest video on the upcoming CanJam London, he talks about BEnchmark's DAC3. This is their current DAC offering and Jude says that it has some of the best measurements of any DAC. Guess what DAC chips it uses....

Benchmark decided to use ES9028PRO when they could have done ES9038PRO so I don’t really think it makes that big a difference...
“When I spoke to Benchmark about the decision to use the ES9028PRO, they told me it was not a cost-related decision. They indicated that, as far as they could tell, processing in the ES9028PRO and ES9038PRO was similar. Although there is a nearly 10-dB reported difference between the signal-to-noise ratio in the ES9028PRO (129 dB) and the ES9038PRO (140 dB), there are few, if any, recordings that can approach either of these signal-to-noise ratios; and, in most systems, the amplifiers would be the limiting factor as far as noise is concerned. Benchmark discusses the lower distortion and noise of the new DAC3 on its website.” -Ben Shyman from hometheater review

"The ES9028Pro is supposed to be an ES9018S with an updated digital core, while the ES9038Pro is supposed to be an ES9028Pro with 4 times the output stages, resulting in an extreme output current capability. This very high current would be the reason why its DNR and THD+N performance would be off-the-charts."

So, if you are able to design good output stages for a ES9028PRO based design, there is no reason for not being able to achieve also spectacular results with it. It all boils down to your design and component quality. By the way, ES9028PRO can be configured to run in current output mode, too:

Agree with both the above posts. Using 9028Pro Vs 9038Pro not a real problem.
