Would you say the low-end of the IM02 is as good or better than the RE-400, in terms of extension, body and fullness in presentation? Not looking for basshead levels obviously, but for realistic body and weight.

 
Yes I do. The IM02 has better detail and separation across the spectrum, bass included. The bass quantity is probably similar but I find the RE-400 a bit congested.

So what is the general consensus on what the price should have been for the RE600? $150-250?  Seems like everyone agrees that the RE400 is waaaay better in value compared to its pricier sibling and some people actually prefer the RE400 over the RE600.

You've also got to take into account that the RE-400 is fantastic value at $100, they probably could have charged $200 and people would still love it. Apart from the build quality, although TBF after my first ones died in less than six months my second set have lasted well.
 
If they had have been $200 and $400 I don't think there would have been anywhere near the fuss there has been. But maybe $150/$300 would be more where they sit value-wise.

imho (and i had both) the RE600 is way better that the re400 - and i wouldn't call it dark/veiled. just linear/balanced.

i also have the re272 which is bright and i find the re600 sound more balanced and as time goes by more addictive(i have it for 1 month now)

i don't think there is a better iem deal now - 200$ for an iem wich i am sure the big/overpriced companies like shure/westone/senheiser would sell at 500+ $

Both have been measured (ON SECOND THOUGHT #5) using the same equipment and procedure, but maybe HiFiMAN changed the tuning since then.

The RE-600's general tonality seems to be a subject of mixed opinion, because both ljokerl and Rin Choi's reviews, and also their measurements, describe and measure the RE-600 as having a more subdued top-end, and less upper treble extension, and paint a picture of a slightly darker tonality, than the RE-400.

with all due respect , screw the measurements and just trust your ears

the tonality of the re600 sits somewhere between re262 (mid-centric, highs rolled off) and re272(bright highs, with zero sibilance)

it is mid-centric and quite forward (compared to the 272 which sounds kinda laid back) with a very nice and controlled bass region and a lush mids region

unless you are looking for a very bright/clinical/analytical iem (like re272/etyr4) this iem at 200$ is a STEAL

there isn't a better iem at that price (or 100-200$ upwards)

Of course, I understand that measurements do not convey the full picture. But even based on subjective/ear review, ljokerl, and several other reviews I vaguely remember reading back in 2013 when the RE-600 came out, mentioned that the RE-600 sounded darker in the top-end, especially upper treble, than the RE-400.
 
If this is the case, I'd be inclined to pass on the otherwise excellent Black Friday deal, because when I auditioned a friend's RE-400, I did find the upper-treble to be noticeably south of neutral, lacking some of the expected air and treble shimmer and brilliance in recordings that I know very well, or have produced or mixed myself. That was my only complaint about the RE-400, during that audition.
