I have a newer HE-6.  My ears don't touch the frame, whether using the velour or the leather pads.  Generally the HE-6 is a very comfortable headphone, especially considering its' weight.

I wish my ear didn't touch the inside.  After about 30 minutes it starts to bother me a bit.  I'd like to try out a new pair and see if it resolves the issue without changing the sound.

Hi ID. If you're referring to the HE6 in your review-pic, then I don't believe that's the latest iteration. The newest revisions are almost entirely black, and that includes the metal earcup connectors, which are silver on yours.

We'll have to get Fang in here to clarify, but either way, it's not a big deal if you already have the new earpads (which is the most significant change).

Even the new velour pads?  Or just the leather?

If this is the case, how different is the sound?

Both the velour and leather are deeper...the latter moreso. The new velour pads have a rubberized locking mechanism and a firmer cushion, which I think is responsible for the added depth. Yes, the sound improves a bit with these on compared to the old velour.

The leather is also surprisingly good, though I prefer the velour.

New velour pads are only $10 + shipping on the head-direct website: http://head-direct.com/Products/?act=detail&id=117

I actually feel the new HE6 are slightly better-sounding than my first two pairs (even with the new pads on those). I'll admit that it could be placebo, but I find the new pair to be a bit smoother.

To me the HE-6 and all full size Hifiman headphones are some of the least comfortable. When I put them on they didn't make contact all around the pad but only the top and bottom which started to pinch a nerve under my ear giving me bad ear aches. I would almost prefer a Grado.

Wow, that's no fun.  I have a pretty large head, and the HE-series seems to be designed to fit medium to larger heads, as the maximum adjustment is quite huge.

It would be worth a try.  Perhaps the different pads might give you a bit more space as well.

I got them within the last month, so I just figured they were of pretty recent mint.  I haven't been right on top of the changes, though.  A friend of mine has an older HE-6, and I've not had any comfort issues with it either.

I have one of the 1st pairs of HE-6 made, and they've always been a little large on my head (dark brownish cups and silver sliders).  My HE-500 and HE-300 fit me a bit better, while the HE-6 push down a little on the tops of my ears because the headband won't tighten quite enough.  Fortunately my ears don't poke out and hit the baffles.

Greetings

As I've written earlier my stock headphone cable started corroding.
I've contacted HeadDirect and they offered to replace my cable if i send the old one back to them.
It's going to cost me about 120$ to send it to them and i guess it would take a couple of weeks before
I'd have the new ones here at home.

Now to the question, in the new version of the cable it looks like they've replaced the heat shrink at the headphone end from where the corrosion started on my cable.
Have any of you with the new version of the cable any problems with corrosion?
I'm also wondering if my money might be better spent towards a aftermarket cable. If someone could recommend some cables I'd appreciate it.

I would put the money in an aftermarket cable. IMO the stock cable is better than most stock cables but still infirion to many aftermarket cables. I personally replaced it with a Zeus cable that is basedon WireWorld OCC copper wires and the love the sound. later i send the ehadphones back to cable manufacturer (who is also a HiFiman dealer) and he removed the connectors and hardwired the cable. the sound impreved even further. I am running them with my Dark Star and love them!

What are your impressions of the SQ improvement when hardwiring?

I just got my HE-6s back from Robert at AphroditeCu29.  I had him hardwire them and re-terminated them with the mini XLR.  I had also recently purchased the Zeus Cable terminated with the mini XLR as well so now they are a perfect match.  I look forward to getting to spend some time with them over the upcoming weekend.

There is also  an HE-500 in the picture, can you tell them apart?

I had exactly the same thing happen

I insisted that they ship a new one (which they did) and if they want the faulty one back they can come and collect it

That looks familiar, I have all of my magnums terminated the same way.
I want to do this to my HE-6's as i hate their connectors but I am not willing to risk the warranty.

I actually gain sound level at the same level of the volume knob due to less resistance than those crapy connectors. The sound is more clean and clear with more 3d presentation and the bass is tighter and with more control. Before making the decision to hardwire them I actually had the opportunity to make an A/B comparison both with exactly the same cable the only difference was mine with the stock connectors and the other one hardwire. The difference was very clear to me and a no brainer.
