I'm guessing it's one of those power adapters that the USB cable plugs into. Like the one that comes with the iPhone

That was a 12V adapter and has a barrel plug. This is a 5V adapter for USB.

Would it be possible to plug a usb cable into the iphone charger and use that to charge the slim?

Maybe

Just because it has a USB connector does not necessarily make it a USB charger.

The USB charging specification is 40 pages long. Everything that is a "USB charger" should follow it. But right now, that's not the case. Maybe in a few years everything will be compliant. When that happens, you will only need 1 adapter for all your devices and billions of $ will be saved. The optional adapter I provide will follow that specification. I'd expect the iPhone one does as well, but it wouldn't surprise me if Apple has put something proprietary in there to prevent use with other devices.

The Pico Slim will charge at either 100mA or 400mA. 100mA will take over 8 hours for a full charge while 400mA will take 2-3 hours. 100mA will be the charging rate from a low power USB port (rare) or a DC Adapter that is not following the USB specification, if it works at all. 400mA will be the charging rate from a high power USB port or the optional DC adapter.

Is the Max input current allowable for the Pico Slim charging circuit 400mA? Or is it higher?

There are plenty of higher current (above 500mA) USB style chargers. I have quite a few for my HTC phones. Ranging from 800mA to 2A. I have plenty of USB Spec chargers that are at 500mA as well.

I think the USB spec is maximum 1.6A. However, that is NOT from a regular USB port, which is 500mA max. The 1.6A is only from a wall adapter or a "USB Dedicated Charging Port" which you may start to see on computers.

The Pico battery is 800mah, and so charging of up to 1C (800mA) is allowed, but I prefer to do half of the maximum so I set it at 400mA.

Only with a much larger battery will it be useful to use a wall adapter to get faster charging times. For this reason the device needs to be able to detect whether its plugged into a wall adapter or USB port. The wall adapters that follow the spec short the D+ and D- (USB data) pins together and the device detects this short. Without that short the device is just sitting there waiting to receive data from a computer that doesn't exist

So, what's the max input current the Pico Slim can handle safely for charging at it's 400mA rate? The two chargers I use the most are 1.6A and 1A. I use the 1A one the most since it's a slick portable one that came with my HTC Touch Pro. And it has a USB port on it, not an attached cable.

That's my concern. I have a Tekkeon battery that I use for my phone and DAPs. It outputs 1000mA so I'm wondering what the max input is too.

What do you do that lasts 35 hours?

Would 32 be okay? How about 24?

I fail to understand the pertinance of the question.
