Best gas station food in America.

Buc-ees gas station has exploded on YouTube because it’s the best gas station food in America.

I was very impressed with their fresh cooked potato chips. These are the fresh cooked version and I actually liked this version better than the ones at high end restaurants. They also sell the prepackaged versions but it’s not the same. You have to actually visit and get it fresh on the spot. The best potato chips

The beef brisket sandwich is excellent and they make it fresh on the premises. Here are some photos of the preparations

Keep in mind this is not a restaurant. It’s a big gas station with a 120 gas pumps. In order to visit Buc-ees, you have to go to Texas or one of the southern states. They plan on opening more gas stations in Colorado and other states in the future. For more details and other food favorites, there’s a bunch of YouTube videos.

Barbecue ribs at Pit Boss near the Atlanta airport.

The bbq here is excellent. Look closely at the photo I took and see how juicy those ribs are. Enthusiastically impressed.

The Atlanta airport is one of the busiest airports in the world so if you have a long layover you might want to check it out since it’s in the area.

The only thing is that you may have to take a taxi or Uber since it’s in an industrial zone and not in a tourist area. I think a lot of the customers are airport and Fedex employees and other people in the industrial area plus locals. Fantastic “secret” spot.

Lemon water ice from Johnnie’s Beef in Elmwood Park, Illinois

This photo was from this past summer and what an excellent summer treat it is! It’s actually my favorite water ice of all time. It gets rave reviews too and people are constantly recommending it. So it does have a little bit of a “cult” following.

110712A2-A48D-4915-846E-33A91C363305.jpeg

There are 2 issues though. It’s best to enjoy it in the summer when it’s hot but Illinois is usually a little too cold most of the year.

Another issue is that it’s located in a Chicago suburb where it’s not close to any subway station. So you would have to drive or find an Uber if you’re visiting Chicago. Thus the location is a little inconvenient- it still accessible for Chicago visitors and residents though.

But other than that, I absolutely adore this lemon water ice. There’s real pieces of lemon and it’s very natural tasting. I can see why locals love it.

Warmed strawberry lavender donut from Federal Donuts in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is where I grew up so when I return for a visit I usually get the strawberry lavender flavor because it’s very good and it’s served at a warmed temperature.

The warmed donut they serve is great on a cold day. People love this donut and the place gets good reviews on the Yelp app.

Best pizza in America?

This is from Grimaldi’s Pizzeria. Back in the 1990s many New Yorkers, tourists and food critics had the opinion Grimaldi’s had the best pizza in New York and also the best in America. Throughout the 90s and into the 2000s it exploded in popularity and it was basically the default recommendation in the New York guide books.

Even today they still have a strong following and many people still have the opinion it’s the best pizza.

It’s a great pizza and I will definitely return but for the record my favorite pizza is Scarr’s Pizza in New York. That said, I can see why it’s a favorite for many pizza aficionados. I love the texture of the crust. It is in a class of its own.

Best fried pickles I’ve ever had

Fried pickles dish is from the south but occasionally you will find them in the northern states. Unfortunately even in the southern states many versions are mediocre.

However this version from the Vortex Bar in Atlanta was the best. Perfect crispy texture. And the sauce had this excellent balance of spicy heat but not overly hot.

Excellent crispy texture and well balanced flavors. So far the best version of fried pickles I’ve had.

Best fried chicken in America?

Gus’s Fried Chicken

Many people have the opinion that Gus’s has the best fried chicken. Overall I have to agree but there are some caveats. It’s not always consistent so it can have its “off days” or “off weeks”. And some cuts of chicken may be better than others.

Here’s a close up shot of the skin of the thigh cut. The crispy crackling texture is simply amazing. The flavor inside is also outstanding too. This chicken is very well balanced and has a level of refinement that’s better than other fried chicken I’ve experienced at the more expensive high end restaurants.

In the category of American style fried chicken, (not including Asian style fried chicken) Gus’s is the best fried chicken. It’s not over marinated like other chickens, it’s not too soft from being over cooked and the flavor is very well balanced.

In order to experience Gus’s chicken you have to visit Tennessee, preferably the downtown Memphis location but there are other locations- mostly in southern states.

As a photo bonus, here’s a pic of their fried pickles.

The nice thing about Gus’s Fried Chicken is that they do sell beer so it’s nice to have this type of food with beer

Classic Philadelphia Cheesesteak …….in a southern state?

I grew up in Philly and have eaten many cheesesteaks and a lot of Philly people feel that the best is in Philly.

However, in my opinion that’s up in the air. In just about every major city in America you can find some version of a Philly cheesesteak. So in theory it can be possible that the best cheesesteak may occur outside of Philly.

Anyway this was a pretty good cheesesteak in Georgia even though it wasn’t made in Philly. It’s pretty much a clone of what you get in Philly with some small differences.

E4D75429-D9AD-4651-B897-5C2C6A42B552.jpeg

And from what I’ve read there’s a place in Nashville that makes an identical clone. Might have to check it out sometime to see.

Crispy chicken wings. However, need to reduce eating junk food. Recently, I have been suffering with high blood pressure, so the doctor prescribed me the treatment and worned me to avoid fatty or juck foods. I've checked about the meds at Canada Pharmacy and I have no intention to be on those meds for a long time. It's better to adjust my diet.

Korean waffles. Technically I’m not sure if it really should be called Korean but waffles have grown in popularity in Korean eateries and they have been expanding the variations in the presentations. There’s a bunch of videos about Korean waffles on YouTube

This is a very good waffle. It’s a much better waffle than the waffles at Waffle House (an American waffle chain). Had a nice crunch and chewy texture but not tough or overly done. The whipped cream was good and it was not overly sweet. A well balanced dish.

I want to mention Lenny’s Pizza in Brooklyn, New York. They closed yesterday after being in business since 1953.

Lenny’s pizza is famous for being in the 1977 movie Saturday Night Fever. The scene where John Travolta eats 2 slices simultaneously. One of my all time favorite movies.

Fortunately I ate there last April and enjoyed their delicious pizza.

Here’s the news report about Lenny’s Pizza. People lined up for their tribute

Steak Quesadilla from a food truck in Austin, Texas

So much amazing looking food on here. That cheesesteak and Italian beef sub look mouthwatering.

Our local Pizza Hut shut down and they don't deliver to my home or work address, so I hadn't had their deep dish for a while. Had a craving so I drove to one in the next town over. Soooo worth it, that greasy crust is just divine
