I'm not sure the DX90 supports DXD.. it's not listed as a feature on the iBasso website. http://ibasso.com/en/products/show.asp?ID=83
Maybe you should write to iBasso support.

I thought DX90 can downscale it to 176.4 kHz / 24 bit PCM for playback internally? Technically, the ES9018K2M DACs inside should be able to do up to 384 kHz / 32-bit DXD / PCM format.

Looks like this feature hasn't been implemented (yet). That might be the reason it's not mentioned as feature on the website.
Contacting iBasso's support gives them the chance to clarify if they are willing and able to implement this feature, if it's possible.

Hi guys

Someone recommend a good sub $300 good punchy bassy headphone to use with the DX90.

The Sony has a better UI, the DX90 slightly better sound. ZX1 is brighter, DX90 slightly fuller sound and better mids.
Better amp in the DX90.

Difference really isn't all that big, I find myself going for the zx1 most of the time, love the UI.

All dap makers can take a lesson from Sony when it comes to a perfectly functional and user friendly interface.

Oh, and the battery is better (actually much better) on the ZX1.

Any difference with hard to drive headphones without an amp with the DX90 vs. ZX1?

Alright,

Who's gonna be the awkward person who writes iBasso to remind them that they said they'd release the driver before the 15th? *touches nose*

 DX90 does a better job.

I use earphones with my ZX1, wouldn't think of using my LCD's or other full headphones.
Never had a problem with earphones.

I haven't tried, but DX90 can drive most full size headphones, from what I've read.

Do you have a particular headphone in mind?

No, just curious. I've got the X3, X5, and DX90 right now, and I think that's enough for now

Well, if you ever want to see how a great UI works on a good sounding DAP then I do recommend the ZX1. You can always sell a couple to acquire funds.
I also have too many DAP's. Hopefully will hear the X5 soon as well.

My list of more recent DAPS that I've heard:

By sound:
DX100>=AK100 (modified)>DX90>Sony XZ1>DX50>Cowon Z2/J3>X3

By ease of use, battery life and UI:

XZ1>COWON Z2/J3>AK100>DX90>DX100>X3

Interesting how ears differ. I have the AK100 and don't even consider it in the same ballpark as the DX90 and my AK100 is modified.

I also find if a huge plus that the battery of the DX90 is easily replaced. The coax out and true LO of the DX90 is a pleasure.

Do you think it will be better to connect an amp via LO to maximize the "true LO" feature of the dx90 even using SE iems? Will it be better than the HO alone?

Just wanted to say that the dx90 is my first true DAP since my original iPod (3rd gen and then a zune, before I cared about GOOD sound and high quality components and files). Wow, I knew there was so much more to the music I enjoy everyday but the dx90 has taken it to a whole new level and then some! This impression is straight out of the box with 20+- hours of burn in on the woodies. Can't wait to see what happens at the hundred hour mark!

And I must say... (Props to Dsnuts for answering many questions for me) the JVC fx850 flagship woodies and dx90 are a match made in hifi heaven. *paradise between my ears*
