I get the feeling that the 880's are "best" for live recordings, MTV unplugged, classical, Norah Jones etc. Listening to Alice in Chains unplugged is just amazing. I never though I would hear the guitarist playing right beside me! But listening to electronica via Winamp right now is also not bad at all...

like I said before the dt880 are the most neutral and natural sounding. If you find neutral phones boring or uninvolving then the sound of live music must also be borig to you.

I have a pair of DT831s and a pair of DT880s. The 880s have the more 'luxurious' sound due to the increased bass response, and have very comfy earpads, but the 831 headband is easier on the top of the head (even with the split spacer trick in the 880 headband). I still listen to the 831s about a quarter of the time. They are just so clean sounding!
I never bother to listen to my HD600s at all anymore. Very smooth cans, but I hate straining to hear the detail in the upper registers. There is just no top end compared to the Beyers.

I made it last night, as you can see its in my first post on this thread. I also sent it in so hopefully it will be with the "official" ones soon. Any upgrades to it are welcome, I am no artist. I like that there is sort of a pedigree of headphone smileys. Newbs: You really can't go wrong with anything that has its own smiley.

I currently have the DT 770/80 and the DT 531 and they both have bucket loads of bass. Great sounding pair of cans and downright comfortable. When I listen to them they just make me want to groove to the music. Guess that's the reason why they call them "Groovalizers".

Are there other beyers that sound a bit more like sennies (especially 650) compared to the 880 now? I'd be interested about that.

The DT880s are not bright but they are detailed enough to pick up upstream problems in your system.The dt860s will pick out even more problems.This is why I recommend that people using the DT860 use only high end sources.

I was using it on a transit -> bel canto dac 2 -> corda prehead

I don't know whether that's high-end enough, but I don't consider it bad.

Live music does not sound neutral in the sense that the word is used on head-fi. Not hardly....

Actually, I heard the DT 860 from JaZZ's rig (Bel Canto or McCormack UDP-1, I'm not sure, and a Corda HA-2 MKII) but I definately have to give the 860 another spin next time and compare it side-by-side to the DT 660. I suppose going from the darkish HD 650 directly to the excessively bright DT 860 was not the best idea.

I am not familiar with your source but I own a Prehead like yours and it is unforgiving.In other words,a good source is required.The Prehead smooths out nothing which in my opinion is a good thing.

I still have a fairly high opinion of the DT860 but it will sniff out any crap you have upstream and this can be tough to deal with.

I didn't listen to the DT 860 on my but on somebody else's system therefore it might not have been representative although the mentioned system (Bel Canto DAC 2, Corda HA-2 MKII) is very good and the Bel Canto is rather smooth than harsh. The DT 660 on the other hand sounds very good in my rig, which currently only consists of the Porta Corda MKI as the main amp. It even sounds good out of my Sony D-465 portable cd player although I can't use the 120 Ohm adapter in this portable rig. I find that the 120 Ohm adapter enhances the frequency balance of the DT 660 and I use the adapter about 70% of the time when I want to tame the brightness a bit. Again, I'll have to give the DT 860 another try at the next meet and I'm very curious to find out whether my opinion about the DT 860 will change based on my experience of the DT 660.
