The Who, Live at Leeds (Remastered).
Arguably one of the best live albums ever... This is raw rock and roll, and the band at its best. If you've ever seen the young Daltry, Townsend and Moon play (Entwhistle just hid in the background), this is the ultimate live set. The newer version includes the complete live version of Tommy, so it's a double CD.

Springsteen and the E Street Band, Live at the Hammersmith Odeon.
Released a year or so ago, great live show, also captured the pre-rock star Bruce and the boys.

Asleep at the Wheel: Tribute to Bob Wills
Rocking country swing, not a bad song in the bunch.

The Beatles...When We're 64
I got this collection (some 30-plus songs) from newsgroups, and I can't find it anywhere. It's obviously a bootleg, but it has some of the most unreal cuts of early Beatles, including a demo (voice and guitar) of Harrison singing Something that can bring tears to your eyes. Lucky to have it, but I can't find it listed anywhere. I wonder if that is even the real name, but the songs, they are most definitely real. All seem to be retakes, alternate versions, etc. A treasure for any Beatle diehard.

Where's the Money? Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. Another great live set, but one of the most musical unknown bands.

In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning.. Frank Sinatra. Old Blue Eye' best studio album.

Groove Armada, The Best Of. A fantastic collection.

Desperado, The Eagles' definitive concept album for courtry-rock.

Lush Life, The Music of Billy Strayhorn (artist is Joe Henderson). Great jazz CD.

Led Zeppelin I...enough said.

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road (Deluxe Edition)...Lucinda Williams

Bookends...Simon & Garfunkel

There Goes Rhymin' Simon...Paul Simon

Sail Away ... Randy Newman

After Hours...Raul Malo

Easy Rider (Soundtrack), Assorted artists

Dirt Track Date...Southern Culture on the Skids

Mind Control...Stephen Marley

Kaya...Bob Marley & The Wailers

Talking Book...Stevie Wonder

Stop Making Sense (Soundtrack, but see if you can get the complete one, not the truncated version)...Talking Heads

The True False Identity...T-Bone Burnett

Nighthawks at the Diner...Tom Waits (live)

Obrigado and Appassionato..Yo-Yo Ma (two CDs)

While it is a fantastic album, I think "...Only the Lonely" is better.

For the other side of the coin, Sinatra's "Songs for Swingin' Lovers" is a favorite.

Anyway, just about every Sinatra album on Capital and several of the early Reprise albums (September of My Years, Jobim, ec..) are necessities for a great album collection.

For blues, it is hard to go wrong with BB King's "Live at the Regal". The Chess Box is a great introduction to many different artists. You will want (at least) the Howlin' Wolf Box, the Muddy Waters Box, and the Little Walter Box after hearing it, though. Magic Sam's "West Side Soul" is also worth checking out. Of course, no blues collection is complete without Robert Johnson.

For soul, look to James Brown's Live at the Apollo 1962, Al Green's Greatest Hits, or the The Complete Stax - Volt Singles 1959-1968.

Since I am not writing a book, I will leave it at that for now...
