...and left these for me

To soon to post impressions, but I've already discovered that on some tracks of Leonard Cohen's "Ten New Songs", the arrangement seems out of phase with the vocals. This is the only headphone I've got that can actually dig Cohen's voice out of the mix on that CD...(got to go listen)

Congratulations, Hirsch,...I pushed 'em up an extra $100 on the auction, but that was as far as I would let myself go! Oh, the Horror......the horror....
One of these days....one of these days......

Congratulations, Hirsch.........Although I understand you want to hear them for awhile before giving us your impressions of their sound, but what's your appraisal of the build quality?

Pardon my ignorance, but what da ****** is that?

They look like Grados, but I can't remember having seen a model looking these....

(****, I'm such a newbie in the world of cans....)

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Are the current Grado RS-1 and RS-2 the replacements for HP-1 and HP-2?

This HP-1 looks way cooler than RS-1.....
(not that I like the Grado sound, but....)

It's a beautiful thing, isn't it?

Soon you will have the permanent wave in your hair ear to ear from the luxurious leather headband that identifies you to all as an HP-Owner.

You've already touched on the biggest caveat of these cans - you can hear stuff on recordings that maybe you weren't 'spose to hear... Bad recordings on regular cans are unbearable with these. You may start to change your listening habits.

Flat pads? Which cable? Do tell!

A Bitch to photograph, aren't they?

ok,

First off, the build quality is awesome. Joe Grado built these to last. The cable says "Grado Signature Laboratory Standard Audio Cable". Is this the original or improved one?

They don't have flat pads. I don't know anything about Grado pads yet, but they have the same ones that are on my SR-200. Foam circle that angles inward toward the driver (currently available pad).

I paid around $600 (their original retail price) on ebay. They hit the max I was going to go on the auction but didn't break it...barely. I just managed to hang on by a hair. Phew! They were calling to me...

My original impetus was the way the SR-200 sounded with the SHA-1. The sound blew me away, and I really wanted to hear it fully developed...that meant HP-1 or HP-2. First impression is that it is every bit as good as I hoped it would be with the Melos. Then I gave it a try with the ZOTL

Erix, I started out with a recording that I liked, but that had a really bad studio mix, IMO. The HP-1 was able to sort out the vocals and the instruments, and actually make it more listenable.

I'll sort out my sonic impressions once I've got some listening time in, but these are amazing headphones!

That cable is the first cable not the upgraded one, and those pads seem to be the bowl pads (the current availble ones) you need to find yourself some flat ones...then your grados will sing!

I have two questions for HP-1 and HP-2 owners....

1) are there any HP-1s with the reference cable?

2) what do the phase switches do on the HP-1s and do they really make them sound better than the HP-2s with the reference cable? I am seriously thinking of going after an HP-2 if they sound better or equal to the HP-1 with phase switch.

They were not made that way, however at the time you could had sent your HP-1 to Grado for an upgrade, so far there is only one of these running around here that I know of.

They fix the phase, if that's a problem. Switch them both up and listen and switch them both down and listen, the difference isn't very big. It's just rare for a headphone to have this. The HP-2 is the only headphone that does.

They sound the same as the HP-2 if they both had the same cable, but the HP-2 sounds better with the reference cable.
