Rockbox Xduoo X3
Apr 29, 2016 at 4:58 AM Post #211 of 2,617
What worked for me was

Formatting drive to fat32 4096 sectors

Unzipping rockbox full onto the sd

Then transferring the still zipped update folder onto the card

then changing that file name to "update" not update.zip

then going through the normal upgrade process on x3

Thanks!!!! It works!
I already have rb

And... thanks to Xvortex!

There was an overwhelming interest and demand for the porting of Rockbox to X3 and XVortex has put a lot of work in it while still tweaking and improving the ported RB firmware... Wouldn't be easier for anybody who's having doubts or negative feelings for the RB port to simply un-install it or not install it....?!

I'm not using rockbox at this current stage. You No need to worry...

What im suggesting is for the better x3 rockbox. Requesting , suggesting, and feedback is what forums are for...

With the same logic , you could easily not replying to my comment :)

So, just to clarify, you're asking for XVortex or someone else to devote valuable time to develop a version of the boot loader specifically for those few who want to install RockBox on their X3s and then not actually use it?

I think you may be waiting for quite a while.

Well, it's difficult to find a nice comparison between rockbox and stock firmware. Is there a list of known bugs somewhere in the russian's forum ?

Add features:
- No pitch issue with 44.1 kHz files (~1% slower)
- EQ and bass/treble gain
- Support m3u8 playlist
- gapless
- add additional themes

Lose:
- No DSD/DSF, OGG support
- 5s delay if we want to hear the previous song
- Maximum allocation size on the microSD card: 4096 bytes ?

Can you keep the rockbox folder on the same card as your music, or does it have to be on a separate card?

Thanks

Thanks, yacobx! It worked for me as well. The trick was going to the command line in Windows 10 and formatting the card just like it was 1996, with switches for file system and allocation size.

I hadn't used my X3 in months, having gone back to my Fiio X1, because of some of the "limitations" within the X3's fw. Now my X3 is like a new DAP and it sounds much better than stock to me. I'm Rockbox ignorant, so I've got a small learning curve for my new toy. It definitely pairs very well with my ie80s - big stage, great 3D separation and incredible detail... Good stuff!

To all who may have bricked their X3: There may be a potential fix.

According to xDuoo, the reason why some X3s are bricked while flashing RB using the old manual method is because the system files are corrupted (duh). However, the device still works in recovery mode. I followed these steps to save my X3:

  • Connect a micro-usb cable to the X3.
  • Pressing the MENU (not back!) button, connect the other end of the cable to your computer. Your computer should now show that you have some device connected.
  • Using the zip and instructions from xDuoo, flash the stock firmware with the same tool RB uses for the manual method. Make sure that you keep the X3 securely connected while flashing - this was why I bricked my X3 in the first place
  • Reboot and flash RB again using the update.zip method. Your X3 has now returned from the land of bricks.

More detailed instructions and file used here. I do not own anything and will take this file down if xDuoo decides I can't distribute it - it is their firmware, after all.

Hope that helps, and feel free to ask more questions.

If anyone wants to get the .zip xDuoo sent me for recovery, please PM me. I'm not sure if I can/am allowed to publicly distribute the recovery, so I'm staying on the safe side.

Hope that helps, and feel free to ask more questions.
