Sennheiser HD800S Unveiled!

I have the hd800 and they are world class.
New S comes with extra balanced cable retuned driver and probably few more minor changes beside what we already know. Once they are measured we will have a slightly clearer picture of the performance. Now that years have passed i would imagine them to be a good upgrade but not major. Thats why extra cable and new color is releasing. To sweeten the deal.

I would be surprised if price is below $1900.

mmm....that would be a terrible miscalculation: changing color to black DOES NOT really impress me and upping the price to reflect the addition of an XLR cable DOES NOT really imress most head-fiers who own the HD 800. In my case, it is acceptable since I have 2 balanced amps that can accomodate the new balanced cables PROVIDED that it is a reasonable length. So, that leaves the re-tuning  as  major and only selling point for this remastered/retuned BUT STILL old headphone and it better impress them a lot or a lot of current HD 800 will not upgrade (it will be a waste of funds). That leaves current non-owners of the HD 800? Maybe. But we all know that the HD 800 sound is an acquired taste (analytical blah blah). Otherwise, it will just be a pathetic excuse to hike the price presumably to keep up with its smaller rivals.

Good point, I already have about 5 cables for my HD 800 (including cables I have ordered that are still being built.)  I would be super happy if they released a cheaper HD 800S base package without any cables or fancy box.

Come on, Senn. Why are you INTENTIONALLY delaying the release of this crucial piece of info????

So they can monitor head-fi and see how much we are willing to fork over for this new flagship

mmm.....I'm expeciting Senn to price this at 1500 or less. If so, this new Senn just made me lose my appetite for the.....................................SHURE KSE 1500 SOUND ISOLATING whatever. Lol!!!

As a HD 800 owner (unmodded unit), a better bass is what I want more than taming the piercing treble (honestly, it is not that bad. I just avoid tracks that elicits a sibilant response)

the shure kse 1500 looks to be an amazing earphone but £4,000+ and non custom id be extremely stupid to buy them.

i had a lovely apetite watching judes video then i felt sick when i look at the price!

Please a musical sounding HD800!

And stop lecturing me, having multiple not-$1000 cans makes me feel like I'm being economical!

Chill  it was advice, not a lecture. It is of course entirely your choice to make a spending decision based on the opinion of others rather than your own

No way!
Only a lowlife trickster from the worst neighborhood would use such sneaky and miserable ways to exploit people ... surely none of the beloved and respected hifi manufacturers would ever do that ... and marketing/ads/sales are the nicest and friendliest people who only want us to be happy :D

Yeah, riiiight! I'm afraid our hobby is heading down the same road travelled by regular "audiophile" hi fi gear and heading into the stratosphere as far as pricing goes. Greedy bastards! We even have "regular" hi fi exhibits at our head-fi meetings now with some very expensive systems on display. And here I was thinking this was "head'-fi. I could go on at great length about the cancer of greed and what it does to an industry but fortunately no-one puts a gun to your head and makes you buy this stuff. Just my 2c worth. I will get off my soapbox now. Cheers.

Thanks for the pic, interesting no one has tried this before because there is no driver diaphram in middle..
I will try in mine..

Regardless, the vanilla stock HD800 have a transparency I feel unrivaled by any HiFiman offerings, or any planar.
Only the stax009 can surpass this in my book..

The problem though, has always been the airy bass that is almost ghost like, lacking in some substance and weight, compared to a planar...
Only a great matching amp will elevate the HD800 to how it should perform,
And even then, planars has more flesh & "meat on the bones" of instruments..

So any improvement in like was said, in the bass, is a big plus
...
Still think it should have been painted in gold.
:p
Edit:
Wish they had an 800L:
(Leather version earcups)
That would been sweet & probably would help bass as well..
:)

i know that the resurgence of planar magnetics seems to have left dynamic cans in their wake - especially in the high-end segment of the market, but i'm not convinced that it's warranted based on my own listening experience.

i compared the hd800 to the he1000 and abyss a while back. contrary to the sales guy's opinion that the hd800 wasn't in the same class as these two newer and far more expensive cans, it out-performed them for clarity, resolution, imaging and soundstage to my ears.

so i'm keen to hear what this new hd800 iteration has to offer, and am hoping that it might turn out to be the high-end open-backed can that i'd be prepared to pay the msrp for.
