Sennheiser HD800S Unveiled!

Debating the pros and cons of the 800 vs. the 800S is an entertaining and worthwhile discussion. For those that really want the 800 to be the equal of the new model, instead of using someone else's ears to argue your case, why don't you formulate your own personal opinion. Take a chance, buy the new one, judge for yourself and if you don't like it sell it. There's a market for the new one.... or don't and try to convince yourself that the one you currently have is the better one by selectively quoting opinions that support your bias.

That's really pretty minor. Proably got scraped during packing or if your retailer opened them (which is common).

I wouldn't worry about it.

What?! If i buy 1500$/€ pair of luxury headphones, i expect that it comes fresh out of the box. Why on earth would retailer open them?

When i eventually order mine, i'll be damn if the retailer even touches the silk material inside of the box.... Going to make sure that they don't even look inside the box. Going to specifically ask them to keep their dirty hands out of my pair of cans.

It has been interesting...reading people's opinions, knowing how my preferences align (or don't) with some of them, formulating a conclusion led me to just the opposite strategy.

Just bought the HD800...better fit for me.

I am planing to buy the HD 800. The HD 800S in my point of view sound out of the box a whole lot better and more musical than the HD 800. But I have no problem with modding headphones and using an EQ to a great extent.

So if I wouldn't use my Headphones exclusively with my PC I would probably get the HD 800S instead.

Since basically the driver and most everything in the new Sennheiser HD800 S seems to be basically unchanged, except for the color, balanced cable, and damper or resonator, does anyone out there think that the regular stock Sennheiser HD800 can ever be upgraded with the exact same damper or resonator as the HD800 S uses, either by Sennheiser themselves, or will offer it for sale so that any DIYer can install it in the regular stock HD800?

It's really not a question of which is better (which will always be subjective) but how one plans to use them. I was just making the point that Tyll prefers the EQ'd HD800 to the EQ'd HD800S even un-modded, just as a correction to what xp9433 had posted:-

Tyll preferred the HD800S to the modified HD800. It was with EQ applied he preferred the modified HD800 to the EQ'd HD 800S and to either headphone without EQ.

I know............  I shouldn't have bothered!

It's just Tyll's opinion of course, but I thought it was worth pointing out that if you use, or plan to use, a good EQ (Sonarworks for example) then it's worth noting that the HD800 might be the better choice for the reasons that he mentions.

I would guess (and it is a guess) that the extra bass/bass distortion is the result of a slightly different damping paper attached to the back of the driver. That's the only thing I can think would achieve it.

If this guess is right, then you could not make an HD800 an HD800S without replacing the driver capsules themselves.

It does mean, if the spare parts that form the new damping/resonating scheme are made available, that you might be able to get a 'best of both worlds' HD800 with the reduced treble spikes of the S but the lower bass distortion of the vanilla.

Have they started to print HD800S on the headband yet and not just HD800? As this may send my OCD into another stratosphere.

No, and they likely never will. The S model is part of the "HD800" series.

They aren't mutually exclusive, and it's always about what sounds better. So when do you plan to purchase the S and or Dupont mod and eq your phones?

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean - what isn't mutually exclusive? (genuine question!)

I plan to use Sonarworks in the near future, as soon as I get a new mac for my studio!

Really? Just got mine and it has an imprinted "s."

Is it imprinted after the "HD800"? Got mine a little over a week ago, no S. Must have gotten one of the last sets without it. Yay! :D
