Astell & Kern Junior (AK Jr.) Impressions Thread

The e17 may not outperform the AK Jr in terms of sound quality and for something like the HD800 you probably want something better. Though volume wise definitely most amps will give you more volume and also better response for headphones.

Or you can get those portable friendly headphones like Grado/Audio Technica

Are you saying the e17 may not be up the job ? If that's the case care to recommend anything else ?

I cant recommend much really. I tried Fiio amps and on general they are better then phones but I dont find them better then decent DAPs. However I yet to hear that many better amps. My current is a ALO CDM which is significantly different (and better if you like warm tube sounding amps).

Well, the FiiO E17 (and its successor, the E17k) is a DAC/Amplifier. You can't bypass the Jr's DAC, so you won't be using the E17(k)'s DAC, only it's amplifier. So unless you need the DAC for other situations (to use with your computer, or a smartphone with OTG support), you can go for a dedicated amplifier. I don't have a ton of experience with amplifiers, but if I were to recommend one from my small collection, it would be the Cayin C5.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to view your library by 'Album Artist' with the player?  It is a feature I really want in a player, but I am having a hard time finding which DAP's actually can do this.  Thanks!

Well, you can go by Artist, then that artist's albums are listed. Not sure if that's what you're looking for.

I just ordered my AK Jr. :)... Which is the best format for the SDCard?

Thanks!!

Do you mean FAT32 or ExFAT? I've used a 128GB card formatted in FAT32 and some people in this thread have reported using their cards formatted in ExFAT.

Not quite.  I don't like viewing by Artist because it puts a lot of entries from random artists in compilation albums.  I only want to see a list of the actual 'Album Artist' that I have set in my tags.  A lot of albums have tracks that might have the artist something like: <artist> featuring <other artist>, but I have the album artist set as just the artist.  Or compilation albums I have the 'Album Artist' set as 'Various Artists' and that's how I want it to show up in my list.  Not sure if this makes sense.

Ah yes, I understand what you mean. I'm not sure if the Jr supports this, but I'll be giving it a try right now and will update you with the results.

Update: Nope, that doesn't seem to be possible (unless I did something wrong?). You can always just play the album from the Album list. It'll show all songs, regardless of the artists. Or using the file browser should work as well (assuming you have your music organized well).

Nope, I've got compilation albums with 'album artist' tagged as 'Various Artists' and they show up as individual artists.
It also can't read the disc number tag, making a mess of multi-disc albums.
