AudioQuest NightHawk Impressions and Discussion Thread

Man just as I'm about to get the Focal Elear Audioquest has to go and make a Carbon version of my favorite hp with Velour pads (though I think the current pads work great, but I've always been a fan of velours).  I assume that its only for looks and that there's no sonic change to them?  I love the way they sound as is so I'd hope they stuck with the original sonic signature.  Also the new cable looks much better so I'd like to get my hands on one seeing as my original cable cuts out unless you hold the end toward the jack a certain way, luckily I have my HD700 cable which works with them and I actually think it sounds better with the HD700 cable.  I feel like the HD700 cable bring the mids more forward a bit and the highs sound a bit cleaner to me as well.

November announcements?

On the first picture is that not the Nightowls on the left and revised Nighthawks on the right? We know the Nightowls are closed but the headphones on the right look semi open with the Nighthawks grill.

Your observations are correct, Sir.
That is indeed a Nightowl and a revised Nighthawk. The latter differs from the original Nighthawk only in colour, earpads and cable.

Ok then we should stop referring to Night Carbons as these are probably not Headphones but a cable. Audioquest informed me that the Nightowls is not a superior sounding Headphone to the current Nighthawks, but is a closed version. So no need to spend more money unless you want closed headphones which may have less air in the sound, but benefits from isolation and less disturbing to others around you.

May want to experiment with the new Pads and Cable but that should not break the Bank.

They are calling it the Nighthawk Carbon because of the new color which seems to be the same as that of the Night Owl.  Carbon is a Porsche color.

This link that I posted earlier is my source plus the pictures posted by YtseJamer

I am happy with the original pads.  I have never liked velour pads that much.  I am interested in the cable but my set of NH is so new I don't want to have to spend more at this time.

The Nighthawks Carbon do in fact replace the current Nighthawks but are not improved - sound wise. Only the cosmetic colour/finish of the cups has changed. I called Audiosanctury from where these pictures derive and asked them. The current Nighthawks in brown will be discontinued. It is costly to produce them in the wood finish.

The Nighthowls are engineered for closed audio listening and again are not superior to the Nighthawks, just different. Although base is tighter as often is with closed cans.

The above information is what Audiosanctury stated in conversation today.

Another thought - will the new Audioquest Headphone stand match the current Wood finished Nighthawks and the forthcoming Carbon Colour - Nighthawks/Nightowls.

That is great that they were able to give you that much information.  I had thought that maybe both colors would be available for the NH.  Of course there are still some in stock at various places.  Wonder how many.  I am happy that I got my brown ones and did not wait.  I am sure that if I do have problems with the current cable it would be covered by warranty.  I need to register mine on the site but it seems I have to remove the pad to get the serial number.

If the stand is black it would be good with both.

Any chance of a price drop in the carbon version? since its not as costly to produce the in the wood finish?

I would expect a drop in the discontinued model...

Are we expecting an official announcement next week?

This is a good thing IMO. As pretty as the wood finish was, it chipped and broke far too easily and holy hell it was like $100 to replace them.

Yeah, I think it was made with eggshell membrane and if you dropped it, it would crack like an eggshell. The move to carbon fibre is a very smart one imo

Sincerely doubt it's carbon fibre. My money's on a different finish for the liquid wood.

I better jump in and clarify/correct the info given...

More info on Nov 1. For now I can say:

  1. The new Carbon finishes most definitely cost more to produce versus the four clear coats on the current NightHawks. The new finish is an automotive-inspired process that consists of multiple layers of primer, base coats, and clear coats—all automated with a final hand-polish for quality control. We buy the same paint Porsche uses on the Panamera called "Carbon Gray Metallic." It's a near-black shade with a subtle hint of golden warmth.

  2. We call the new headphones "Carbon" because of the finish, not because of the cable. In our cable lineup, we reserve "Carbon" for digital cables only.

  3. The earcups are still made the same way from liquid wood. The wood aroma remains.

  4. NightHawk wood will be discontinued. If you are thinking about buying a NightHawk, I suggest waiting until after our announcements next week.

  5. NightHawk and NightOwl sound very similar. The goal was for them to be as close as possible. But they are just different enough that I believe it is worth listening to both before deciding if you want one or the other.

  6. The headphone stand is black so that it will match anything. We might (BIG might) do other colors/finishes in the future.
