Okay so I'm looking for closed cans that can be powered by ~$100 portable amps. There are so many that I thought the best thing to do was to compile a list of good cans at that price range and then go through process of elimination. Here are some I have already compiled.

  1. V-MODA Crossfade M-100 --- http://www.head-fi.org/products/v-moda-crossfade-m-100
  2. Denon AH-D600 --- http://www.head-fi.org/products/denon-ah-d600
  3. PSB M4U 1 --- http://www.head-fi.org/products/psb-m4u-1
  4. Blue Microphones Mo-Fi --- http://www.head-fi.org/products/blue-microphones-mo-fi-powered-high-fidelity-headphones-with-integrated-audiophile-amplifier
  5. Sennheiser Momentum --- http://www.head-fi.org/products/sennheiser-momentum
  6. Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro Black --- http://www.head-fi.org/products/beyerdynamic-custom-one-pro-black
  7. Sony MDR-7520 Professional Headphones --- http://www.head-fi.org/products/sony-mdr-7520-professional-headphones
  8. Sony MDR-1A --- http://www.head-fi.org/products/sony-mdr1a-premium-hi-res-stereo-headphones

Anyways here is from my previous posts if you goes want to be awesome.

Headphones

  1. Budget - $275-400
  2. Source - whatever portable amp/dac you guys help find
  3. Requirements for Isolation - I'm living in a dorm next year so a lot
  4. Preferred Type of Headphone - Closed over-ear/on (preferably over)
  5. Current headphones - Mdr-ma100 (not in stock anymore but was $200)
  6. Preferred Music - Alternative and more base heavy
  7. Usage - For mainly music and games and they will be on the go like only %5 of the time.
  8. Extra context - I definitely need this to be a more bass centered headphones as my current ones appeal more to my treble based music. The VMODA M100 are basically the perfect headphones for me as far as I can tell, but I'm not convinced on their audio quality and there is still $150 lest i my budget.

Amp/DAC

Budget - ~$100

Requirements - portable

Other - I've been eyeing the FiiO E07k and the FiiO E17 but I'm not sure what the difference is besides the price

Extra - I'm sure I'll need a Amp, but I not not to sure what a DAC will do for me

Here is my order of importance

  • Sound Quality
  • Isolation
  • Portability
  • Comfort
  • Bass
  • Aesthetics

Anyways thanks a lot for the help

The Mad Dog is semi-open.

Directly from the MrSpeakers website: The MrSpeakers Mad Dog with Dog Pads earned a solid reputation as an excellent sounding closed headphone that’s super-comfortable and an incredible value.

I wear these every day in my office and they isolate really well.

Then maybe they have changed the design.  See:

The Fostex on which they are based/modded is semi-open, although it does not leak much.

Hrmm. Interesting. I've had the most recent revision for some time and I would have never considered it to be semi-open. Perhaps he sealed the externally facing openings from the inside? My mad dogs don't leak at all.

If you want emphasized bass, then I think you want the Vmoda M100. Here's the thing - typically, the farther up to the summit you go, the more neutral and flat the headphones become. At the very bottom, the headphones have no real audio engineering, and they sound however they sound when you put a cheap driver in a cheap plastic cup covered in felt. As you move up in price, the headphones start to be designed for specific sound signatures - some try to be as flat as they can be at their price point, while others try for a specific coloration that the designer thinks is pleasing to their target market. But if you keep going up the line, the sound begins to converge. Summit-fi headphones don't all sound the same - but they also typically don't have a very strong coloration. Things become more subtle.

So - just because you haven't spent all of your budget doesn't mean you will find a "better" headphone for *you* - it just depends on your specific tastes. There are many, many people in this forum that would NOT like the sound of the Abyss headphones ($5500) - they might call them "bass-light" because they don't go boom-boom on every note, while others might praise them for their accuracy. Different strokes for different folks...

You said that you were not sure if you needed a DAC. But, I don't think you told how you plan on using this system - will it be portable from your phone or some other portable device? Or, is it hooked to your desktop PC? If it from your phone, is it an Android or iPhone?

The different Fiio amps are not all the same - they use different circuits and parts, and they have different features. The E07K is not the same as the E17. The E17 has a lot of features that the E07K does not have.
