TEAC HA-P90SD (To be released in Dec, 2014)

^ P90SD is still my favorite sounding dap I've got.

Big statement!  Do you have more sound/quality of life comparisons between your other players (particularly the DX90 and ZX1)?  It looks like such a nice unit.

Do you have a battery life estimate for it?  Is the UI that bad that you can't browse Artist -> Album -> Songs?  Also I read that the build quality didn't really seem that solid?

UI isn't bad, can easily search by artist or album lists, tags just have to be properly done to work.

Build is more solid than all my other daps actually, and it's weighty for sure, I think the ugly design is the psychological reason some people think it's not built well.

This thing is a power guzzler, it drains it's 3500mah battery in 5 hours in high power mode, but low power mode increases battery life, I haven't checked how much by.

On sound I find it airy, spacious, dynamic, punchy, extended, accurate, natural, powerful, it's kind of like the combination of the strengths of each of my other daps put together, it doesn't have any weak spot's imo. I like it so much I am going to buy the Onkyo HA300 just so I can be spoiled for choice with a slightly different flavor of this great sound Onkyo and Teac have developed together.

it does imo

the weakest spot - soundstage, which is projected inside of your head, lack of deepness

5 hour battery life!  Dang that's a huge bummer.  I would mostly be using these with IEM's so I could probably run it in "low power" mode but I think that kind of defeats the purpose of having such a powerful player?  Curious to hear how it sounds though since your description makes it a good sell.

It turns out I'm a classical music listener myself, and I just purchased a TEAC HA-P90SD (even after reading your reviews :)).  After doing some extensive research, I can tell that this an impressive peace of hardware (possibly one of the best currently available), and I like the minimalistic software: but I have a few questions.

When you say "lengthy filenames", exactly what do you mean?  What is the longest filename, in characters, that you have found to work?  Also, you mentioned something that needs to be done in order to avoid tracks from appearing multiple times: exactly what was this you did?  And which software did you use?

-The UI is imbedded into the Blackfin DSP chip, that's why it is so simple, this will give better SQ as an imbedded OS won't be using any additional resources that could introduce jitter into the audio processing (this happen's in many other daps, like android based).

I don't think that's true. The FW is mounted like any OS. It's simple and doesn't use a heavy shell like Andriod but may still be unix based. May be direct coding as well but I doubt it's embedded. Embedded means the SOC has the FW and codecs already as part of the hardware when purchased from the supplier. Basically that if you defaulted the blackfin to factory spec, it would still have at least rudimentary navigation and play functions.

Says on Teac website "Blackfin® processor—which features low power consumption characteristics—and an embedded OS help realize extended playback times"

Yeah the P90SD sound stage is different to DX90 and most daps, but not weird. To me the DX90 has a wide but flat sound stage, most dap's fall into this type of sound stage. While the P90SD has a tall and deep sound stage. I like the P90SD type of sound stage personally, it gives the impression that there is no walls to the sound stage, even though sound stage width is small, best way to say it is P90SD sounds airer as a result. But the P90SD type sound stage also needs to pair well with the headphones for best effect, while the DX90 type of sound stage is easier to pair.

Bought P90SD during a trip to Tokyo. Luckily the firmware is the same for all region.

My first DAP and first time listening to DSD. Loving it!

Thanks to dwbeeker14 for the advice on tagging the files. I used mp3tag to edit metadata on .dsf files
