Denon AH-MM400

Always refreshing when a headphone allows you to get fully absorbed into the music without a constant thought buzzing in your head going "I wish it did that better". The fact that you're all supposed to be doing comparisons and forgetting to is a testament to that.

Agreed! The reason I sold many of the higher-tier headphones I owned before was because I often found myself analyzing the music rather than getting immersed and thoroughly enjoying what was playing. The MM400s are one of those cans that I found where you can just sit back and enjoy the music pure and simple.

Music is there to be enjoyed, not analysed. There are studios for the latter :)

I can add a few words about it after visiting my local denon dealer.

I was very sceptical about smaller diaphragm diameter comparing to d5000/d7000 but decided to give it a try anyway at my local denon dealer and I am still in shock how good it sounded. Tested mainly on classical most demanding tracks with high dynamics, hard to resolve tonality and upper harmonics (piano, cello, violin, large orchestra - amazing resolution, nothing is lost during complex passages, clarity and treble are freaking out of this world and really natural). When playing instrument solo there are a lot of small details that many other headphones can only dream about. Then I played some jazz tracks. Oh my lord ... I loved the speed, transient response, details, thunderous attack and saturation of instruments. Saxophone played lifelike, piano had proper weight and reverb, upper midrange was perfect (something i didnt like at all in d5000/d7000, m400 upper midrange is something like in high models of hifimans which I love - has that spark and bite, is a bit raw and really adds some realism) resolution was outstanding - no matter how many instruments very playing at the same time. I am thinking about buying this headphone. Maybe I will get it for 1 day test and check it out in my home setup because I tried it only from my samsung galaxy output with many especially prepared tracks for testing (LOL !) and it played so amazing.

m400 is extremely comfortable in my opinion. Despite not too big diaphragm my ears got covered completely by it. It completely disappeared from my head after a few minutes of listening.

Tried m300 also but it is in completely different league, not that clarity and resolution. It easily loses control too with bass comparing to m400 when bass is perfectly controlled even from portable device driving it. Also tried some bose stuff being really curious, my lord ... not gonna comment it.

Yeah, I must say; I love listening to piano pieces with these headphones. It almost feels real, if the recording is proper.

Finally I get my AH MM400. This headphone is stunning in term of sound and looks!
But one thing I notice on mine, the earcup hinges (where it folds) are bit loose? (compare to P7 which has more firm hinges)

I wonder why these cans are not getting much attention. Maybe planars outdo them (good ones like the LCD-3) and their older Music Maniac series (the series before this one) was so rubbish no one's caring too much for Denons anymore.
Sometime next month, when a dealer I know gets more Chord Hugos in stock I'm going to buy one and also listen to this M400 I know they have there. Can't wait!

It is baffling to say the least. Their lack of availability worldwide isn't helping. To me, this is like discovering a little treasure chest. People have compared these to Planars, namely the PM3, and I haven't seen any reviews that indicate it's left the Denons out in the cold. Can't wait to hear your thoughts marrying these up to the Hugo.

I also auditioned today lcd-xc, lcd-x, lcd-2f, oppo planar, and newest edition of hd800 - only hd800 could match details and upper midrange sparkle/bite of m400 I was looking for so I was really shocked regarding m400 price and compact size. m400 has much better saturation and punch comparing to hd800, maybe not so textured like hd800 (which is really amazing) but all the rest was even better in my opinion listening to solo instruments and classical recordings (but still - piano, cellos and violins sounded superb on hd800, all the audeze stuff was too close to stock he-500, too many similarities, I would rather choose some he-4, he-5le or he-6 to have much better clarity, details, sense of space, amount of air on the soundstage and realism). I think it's gonna be freaking killer in a few next months and the price may go up in time. New grado gs1000 was also amazing in terms of soundstage, midrange details, transients speed and texture. But not too great in bass department, so maybe if I had to choose ONLY for classical there would be ultimately somelthing between hd800 and gs1000 (havent heard stax omega still, but after hearing some 4xx and 3xx stax combos with amplifiers I wouldnt take this crap for listening to music even for free). If you still havent heard this new baby of denon you should go and have a listen to your nearest denon dealer - you will be surprised, seriously.

Yea, I really hope these cans get some more publicity. They definitely deserve it, they're a killer in their price level, EASILY well worth their cost imo!

Would be awesome to see a review from Tyll, that would no doubt bring a lot of interest to them (if it's a positive review of course but I have no reason to believe it wouldn't be).
