ok.... the only part of that that I understood was that you haven't had a reason to use a playlist in 40 years.   But I caught a whiff about rockbox.  Do you think that rockbox would recognize the playlists, which i haven't   been able to live without for 40 hours?

I think I've done what you suggested and I don't think it worked.  Regardless, it's 2:58 a.m. where I am and we should both be either listening to music or sleeping.  But I'm not going to sleep soon  because I have no solution to this problem...(prospective buyers, if you use playlists, do not buy the dx90)

the problem with importing playlists to the dx90, I consider that a defect that makes the player unusable. If after every song I have to stop in my tracks and search the device for the next song, that is just stupid. If I can't import my existing playlists, then that is stupid too.  The reason I am stressing this is that I would not have ever bought the dx90 if I knew that I would have to construct each playlist, as well as make all the changes, in the dx90 device itself.  I thought that because the dx90 used the m3u playlist format and because my playlist manager on my laptop used the same format that I would be able to import playlists from my laptop.  No. The title of me  playlist may or may not be present, but even if it is present it may be empty.

You could create a folder with all your playlist songs and just play that from the directory. That's what I do.

can we pretend that I'm an idiot, which I very well may be. I thought a playlist was a folder.  I just looked at the dx90 and I can't find any way to distinguish a folder from playlists.  There is a playlist catagory (ironically because when I "tap" it, it's useless), but the only other folders I see are genre and album and artist and all music.  None of these are of any use at all in terms of a playlist.  It's almost three thirty in the morning and I can't believe I'm discussing this.  Playlists are something that the cheapest Sony MP3 player can deal with. The reason I bought ibasso instead of Fiio was the playlist issue. Here I am pulling my hair out.

I meant just copy your playlist into a folder on your SD card and play it from there instead of going into playlists.

I've been doing that.  And every hour or so I will do a "media scan" and after I wait for the "media scan" to finish I'll search the playlists and tap on a playlist at which point the whole device will lock-up.  Why do they even show you the names of the playlists if you can't play them?  It's cruel!  And when you tap on one of them the whole thing locks-up?!  What the hell?

it just occured to me that I've been so focused on getting the playlists to work that I haven't noticed that I haven't actually heard any music at all from the device.  So I just tried to listen to music, any music at all. And I couldn't even listen to one song.  What is going on? 5 hours ago I could at least listen to something.  This thing is as bad as a Fiio device.

too much cheese causes stress i guess -  some good weed would soothe out all those inner neurotic demons and make you less stressed

chill , man - these are 1st world problems , just drag&drop all the songs you want inside a folder , name them playlist 1/2/3 and done

I realize these are first world problems.  Every single issue on Head-Fi is a first world issue.  And the weed is not an option because I am drug tested regularly, thus in order to achieve the altered states of consciousness I require to "chill" I need good gear.  The dx90 at the moment even play one song, let alone the playlists.  It's a 398.00 brick. I don't need a 398.00 brick. And you don't know how hard it was for me to commit to a purchase like that.  And you don't know how much time I spent saving up that kind of money.  And you have no way of knowing that my mom died 3 years ago from a heart attack brought on in part from financial pressures so for me to spend money on luxury like this is not easy.  And if I do spend that kind of money it's because I think it's important.  And I do. I think Music is important.  It's my therapy. And I have to decide whether to keep the dx90 or not.  I don't have the luxury of just letting it sit in the back of a drawer.  Whether or not the playlist function works or not is actually a big deal for me.  But even if it weren't, the thing isn't even playing anything at the moment.  I've tried the folder suggestion. You are not the first to suggest it.  Doesn't work.  As far as smoking weed, that's kinda off the table for me.

Sorry to hear all this, and yes you're right, a lot of people forget how much money 300$ can be, and is. (though I'm sure these kind of comments are far from being personal...)
Have you tried a hard reset (can't remember how it works, but you can do it.)?

i hope you find the solution on the dx90 issues , sorry about your mom , i think that parents are probably the best people we meet on this planet (if you are lucky to have loving ones at least) so i can feel your pain here

maybe dx90 is not the dap you need , if it isn't sell it and move on

(bummer about the drug testing thing)

You could send it back or just sell it and get something else. Or go for a D14 paired with an android.
