Havi B3 Pro-1 Impressions Thread
Jul 30, 2014 at 10:49 PM Post #1,217 of 4,032
I'm running through DAPs as fast as how I change my undies. HDP-R10 -> B3 is a disgusting combination. Resolution, imaging, soundstage, clarity, detail, richness, smoothness. All digustingly good. (Although, the HDP-R10 does make everything I'm putting at it sound too good, as long as the recordings fed aren't crap)

I concur with you gyx11. Its quite an amazing IEM for its price. I personally find them to be in the level of $150-$250 range from major brands.
Its quite a good beginner step into headfi. Highly value for money IEM. I’m still playing with the tip and would love to hear more opinions on various tips that can change the sound signature.

Should be that good

Are Fiio e11 and Topping NX1 good budget amps for Havi b3?

Just read through bits of this thread again searching for more tips that work well... Unfortunately the senn d-flanges just don't work for me. I have a handful of various types of wide bore silicone tips I've tried but nothing's really stood out at this point. Most of the other d and t-flange tips I have are just way too long for the havis. Comply T-400 aren't terrible, but they do make these guys stick out really awkwardly far.

I saw the reference to HiFiMAN flanges and went searching... I found http://head-direct.com/Products/?act=detail&id=33 here that look like the same tips, but with shipping it's like $20 for only 2 pair. Has anyone seen these or anything similar anywhere else? Can't find any knockoffs on ebay or anything atm.

And while I'm at it can anyone recommend any other specific tips that work for them? With every other IEM I have/had I've found one pair of tips and had an "Aha!" moment where I knew it was just right... Right now just everything sounds fine with the Havis but anything other than foam tends to lose its seal or become uncomfortable after a while. As stated above, I've tried senn d-flange, all the stock tips, other random silicone wide bore tips from ebay, auvio, comply t-400, comply ts-400, various double flange and triple flange which are too long, other silicones I have on hand from pistons, tenores, etc. The wonderful tips from the Phillips SHE3590 fit great but seem to be too narrow bore for these phones.

I have JVC spiral dots, more random silicones from ebay, and meelectronics single flanges on the way. Please help

For the moment I'm using the stock foams and comply but I agree with other posts that it should mostly be unnecessary with these guys because the IEMs themselves are so comfortable and I'd like to get the best out of the sound on these.

BTW using with Fiio E18 on high gain + bass boost and the moments when I can get some tips to fit for a minute they really shine, especially on live recordings.

Unfortunate to hear the senn double flanges ain't working for you. The first month I was tip rolling my havi quite a bit before havi started including the senn double flanges which I ordered off ebay and had a wonderful experience with the b3 afterwards. But everybody has different ears, personally I aim the senn double flanges slight tilted upwards when I insert them, play music and fiddle a little before hit just the right seal.

Senn double flanges aside I have tried those hifiman flanges that came with my re-400 but mine are black and apparently hifiman has been including more tips with their iems now. The real big hifiman double flanges fit my ears quite easily but they are so large that only really the first flange is sitting in my ear and the other flange is sitting outside. Sound sig comparatively to the senn double flange is that I'm getting more mid bass and that is making sound sig bit darker and not as clear as before. But personally before the senn double flanges I used the smaller hifiman double flanges. The black ones.

Though they are small they really do a great job of getting a seal. Bass response is around on par as the senn double flange just the reason I use the senn tips over these bad boys is that soundstage and clarity isn't as good likely due to the smaller bore opening.

The tips from ultimate ears has really taken me by surprise, I got some ue 350 and tried their single flange clear tips on the b3 and they sound remarkable and very clear. These tips I'm giving a listen to Deafheaven they really do show off what the havi can muster.

So for me I'd rank my tips as the large sennheiser double flange=/=large ue single flange tips (may need more of a listen) > hifiman small double flange > large hifiman double flange.

Dear @jcwyly
I think I understand your problems.

Let me give you some guides.

First of all please check this page for the "Iem insertion guide with drawings" (prepared by ClieOS and sambo60):
http://www.head-fi.org/a/basic-guide-to-in-ear-canalphones

If you're not trying to insert the iem with a "proper technique" you might fail to insert it correctly.

I always insert my B3's using the Etymotic technique on the above page. To understand it better please search Youtube with the words "iem , insertion , technique " and watch some videos.

If you're already doing the insertion this way, just pass my words...

Also, if you do not press and squeeze the foam tip before insertion you may not be able to push it forward.

Please check this link for a guide for preparing and inserting a foam tip (prepared by Joker and Tyll):

...and try as many tips as possible. Rub the oily surface of your tips (except the foams) with alcohol. Excessive oil (wax) can lubricate the delicate surface of an eartip and this can cause pop-outs as well.

PS: Never rub a non-silicone iem ear-tip with alcohol as you may damage it. Also, cleaning should be done after removing the ear-tip from the iem!

Hey @Netforce ,  if you push the Hifiman double flanges all the way  down the bore of the B3 (like the one I show you on the photo) they fit better IMO.

This way "tip bore depth" shortens, fitting is more secure and sound is better IMO. I suggest you to try this method if you haven't done yet

EDIT: @Netforce I just check your link for hifiman ear-tips. These ear-tips are different than the one I show you on the above photo (white silicone double-flange hifiman).  So I have no idea...

The double flanges that came with my vsd3s are also very good with the B3's, might even compete with the s2 tips as my favourite.

@baycode Thanks for the tips
biggrin.gif

Though I don't think that's the problem in this case. I read both of those threads a few months ago and often use both methods depending on the iem and foam vs silicone.

I actually don't have fit issues most of the time in the left side of the Havis... in fact I would wager that I could put a wooden shoe on the left side of the Havis and they'd still fit well. The real problem is on the right side, where something seems just a bit different for me... So although I haven't achieved the perfect fit yet I have experienced the full beauty of the Havis for small periods. So that's why I ask to see what works for other users, as other shapes of tips may finally get a good, long-lasting seal in the right ear.

Also in addition to your notes, one thing that seems to help me fit the Havis in general is inserting as you show, but from the bottom for each ear... then kind of twisting them into place. I supposed this is similar to how many CIEMs are inserted. With direct insertion the senns don't even fit my left properly, but using this method seems to help quite a bit with various tips on these. Still no luck finding the best one for the right ear yet though

EDIT: Mention fail... how do you mention correctly on these boards? Can't find it anywhere

jcwyly just press the @ button on the top of the reply box and write the username for "mentioning".

Did you try various sized tips for your rigt ear different from your left side? Or do you always use the same sized eartips for both ears?

We need some contribution for some different brand/type eartips here from other users...

Dear HairyHeadMara I am waiting for those photos of your eartips
