  Yeah, Hugo is wonderful!

Do any of you guys try the diy mod of adding 5F supercapacitors in parallel to the internal batteries?

Guys from Taiwan managed to get TT-like sound by doing so.

No, I would probably burn my house down.

No, but I'd like to try.  If I could find someone to do the work as I'm not visually qualified.
Is there a source for a schematic or diagram?

It's too risky as the internal batteries may explode when shorted!

It requires high skills in soldering and much of... luck.

But this guy in Taiwan says it worths the effort.

Mr. Rob Watts,

some questions on the batteries:

1. What's the life span of the batteries (in my home setup, I leave Hugo on 24x7 with charger in)?

2. What's the indication that batteries need replacement?

3. What's the total cost of replacement including shipping and handling (I live in EU)?

1. With charger connected, the batteries are given correct current to match Hugo's current draw - so the batteries are not being charged/discharged. They will last for a very long time in this mode.

2. It not working I guess.

3. You will need to contact Chord or your dealer for this one.

Dear Rob,

I would like to say again how much I love my Hugo which I have been enjoying in my car on the way to work.

I can clearly hear what the Hugo does in terms of what you have mentioned "Most notable was rapid rhythms being reproduced with breathtaking clarity - before piano music sounded like a jumble of notes, now I could hear each key being played distinctly. The next major change was timbre variations - suddenly each instrument had their own distinct timbre qualities, and the loudest instrument dominance effect was gone. "

This is clearly audible and it is making my commute much more enjoyable ! For me each instrument sounds distinct and clear, and there is no dominance effect. I have never heard digital replay this good.

I have some small questions : I am thinking of using the headphone out into a Din cable for my Naim preamp at home, is there any advantage to this instead of RCA? Do RCA plugs become loose over time (apparently, they do) since I am unplugging the Hugo daily from my main hi-fi to use in the car. And so the cable I am thinking of buying has a 9mm plug casing diameter for the 3.5mm headphone jack will this fit the Hugo?

How many on-off cycles will the switch last (hopefully enough), is it worth switching the Hugo off at night to preserve the battery? I know you said you don't yourself and have answered the question above already, but just asking about the on-off switch.

Thanks

This is not advisable at all and should not be encouraged for obvious safety reasons.

If you buy a TT, you can always earn the money again. I would never advise anyone to open up electronics of any kind to tamper with them.

All connectors will get loose with time. The 9mm is fine.

The switch is gold plated and rated at 10,000 operations, and yes I kept mine on - until it got replaced by Dave...

Happy listening, Rob

Yes the DAVE is much much better, but the Hugo or Mojo are great for the car, aren't they?

It turns my humble standard car audio into a hi-end listening (musical and engaging) experience every time.

Absolutely Dave is better than Mojo/Hugo.

But what I am about to tell you is personal - it may apply to others, or it may only apply to me.

My audio designing career has been about one thing only - to try to maximize the musicality - and by this I mean being able to emotionally enjoy the music. When I was a teenager and first started getting involved in this hobby my Mum used to say why are you spending time on the equipment, all you are doing is listening to the sound not the music. My answer was I can't hear the music, I only hear the sound, and I need to improve the equipment so that I can hear the music and not the sound.

Thus started my life long quest of improving musicality - and its not been an easy journey, certainly not with the challenges that digital makes.

But it was always about making the equipment better, and nothing really worked - oh I made big advances in musicality, but I was still listening to the sound, not the music.

Until Hugo came along, and then everything completely changed for me. I could listen all day - and the music was now completely addictive and engaging - so for the first time in my life I started enjoying the music and not caring about the sound. It was like a light had been switched on - my analogy is that before Hugo I was living in a musical cave, with a candle for light - post Hugo I am outside the cave in bright sunlight with a lovely vista.

So Hugo was a defining moment in my career - because for the first time ever I can get emotionally satisfied with recorded music and not worry about the sound. But what is curious is that technically there was not a great deal different between the Qute and Hugo - indeed at the time I was seriously puzzled as to why technically Hugo was a step change in musical performance for what was a relatively small change technically. I (think) I understand why now, following the Dave project. But because it is a relatively small change technically, does lead me to say that my experience is very personal - it will not be night and day for other people.

So what I am trying to say here is that Hugo was the first digital device that actually worked for me musically; Dave is clearly better, but just rests on what happened with Hugo.

Rob
