Chord Hugo

what player are you using on your mac?
am actually using jriver media player and have no problem using it so far plugging it on the HD USB..
the macbook pro automatically detects the hugo..

JRiver as well. It's weird because the JRiver does see it but doesn't play.

Also, did anyone experience a white light when Chord Hugo is turned on but charger is not attached to it?

Its the authorization light - it proves the FPGA has the correct 512 bit encrypted key from the flash OTP that matches the FPGA unique DNA number. This is the security that prevents other manufacturers copying Hugo's FPGA.

The post above by Mr. Watts might be what you see?

The light is to indicate balance of battery of the Hugo. Please observe when using longer the color of this light bulb will change.

I've not seen the battery level light white.  Starts blue to green to yellowish to red, from what I've seen.  I thought gzone was referring to the light that is not directly beneath the clear lens, but off to the side slightly; and not the "battery charging" light.

Hello Head-Fi!

So I just ordered a Hugo, which should arrive tomorrow. Needless to say, I'm very excited. So excited, in fact, that I'm starting to think about a nice new headphone to go along with it. I would be immensely grateful if someone could give a recommendation pertaining to the following parameters: I listen to 70 % comtemporary electronic music from Ambient to the roughest Berghain-style stompers, 15 % 80's pop music (yeah, I know, kind of a guilty pleasure of mine, sorry) and 15 % classical (however, I suspect that might be changing a little bit in favor of the latter as I'm growing older, and I'm looking for something that is future-proof, so feel free to suggest something that you think is suited for classical music. But it should definitely be good with synthesizers, because I'm already old enough to know my love for those will never really wane). I currently own an Ultrasone Pro 900 but am looking for a definite upgrade -- something that is really hi-fi, crystal clear, very resolving, open-sounding, airy, but has the right amount of bass if needs be -- I guess if such a thing exists (please tell me), it will be bound to be  flagship material.

The thing is that I have two preferences that I have yet to find combined to my satisfaction in a single headphone: I'm a huge sucker for both soundstage and bass. Now, I have read any thread there is on Audeze LCD-3 and LCD-X and have finally come to the conclusion that I will not be buying either because I'm worried, frankly, about all the reports of failing drivers, cracked wood rings and whatnot. If I lived in the US I would probably go for it anyway and just keep my fingers crossed, but living in Europe, it would be too much of a hassle to RMA them. Is there anything that sounds close to these babies, but coming from a more traditional industry player perhaps? (It breaks my heart to ask this, since I support independent labels, stores etc. whenever I can, but there is just too much at stake here not to play it safe. I discarded Hifiman for the same reasons, by the way -- just too worried about general build quality.) I heard that the Fostex TH-900 is supposed to have good synergy with the little Englishman that we're all so crazy about, and might cater to my needs, but I'm not altogether sure if it is in the same league as the Audezes and enough of an improvement over my Pro 900 to justify the investment.

The Pioneer SE-Master 1 has piqued my interest, but there are almost no reviews around (yet?), and so far reactions are kind of mixed ...

So, anyway, please hit me with suggestions as you see fit. Oh yeah, one more thing: I quite like the sound of my Westone W3's as well, so anything along those lines, improving on that kind of sound signature, would be welcome as well.

Thank you very much!

(Yay, first post! I have a feeling it won't be the last ...)

Audeze LCD3 - Only if your head size is not too big
Audeze LCD2
Denon 7000
Sony Z7
Stax SR-009 using Hugo as wire control with amp
Sennheiser M2 using as wired
Sennheiser HD800 - this is sublime
Audio Technica AD900 - yeah, this cheap
Fostex TH900 - not as good as Grados
and my favorite is
AKG K812, especially with Diamond USB2 cable by AQ
IEM, only tried the shure 846. it's ok

IE800 is great with HUGO, and pretty much genre agnostic.

I love Senn ie800 and my new HD800 with Hugo. And Shure 846s. Even makes my Westone W40s and Grado 325e shine.

I'm into electronic, ambient, down tempo, jazz blues, even classicle. Th900 by far, possibly mids are weak for classicle but I still love it. Drums in jazz, or eighties ( don't listen really) except for talk talk, chalk circle, talking heads, Mortal coil etc. is amazing. I can't stress that th900 is made for electronic, percussion, sub bass of ambient. Especially modern ambient like mono lake, biosphere etc.. Th freaking 900 you will be very happy. Seperation and 3 d is awesome.
Iem wise shure 846 but you need double helix copper Litz fusion cable 8 braid that will set you back huge so your choice in that regard. Sub bass and separation again these however have way more mids than th900

Oh, another thing on Hugo.

If you happens to let the battery run down completely.  Do not freak out when it does strange things after you plug back the charger. Things like music stopping abruptly, lights going crazy and so on.  This is the battery recalibration cycle working to replenish the dead battery.  It's normal.  Walk away and give it like 30 minutes before using again.
I simply leave it plug in all the time whenever I am back from travels.

TH900 is hands down the most fun and exciting for electronic music for sure. Some quibbles about it I have are midrange is kinda laid back and less in your face and detail that is obvious with something like an Audeze or a HD800 is just not there. It's not like the detail is less noticeable, it's surprisingly not there (but this does not take away from the enjoyment, especially with electronic only compared to classical or something like that). Basically to sum up the TH900, it's crazy, has an immense soundstage despite being a closed-back (bigger than some open-backs even), has great tight bass, fun treble, but midrange and detail that falls a bit short for certain music.

Agreed with fisaco. I'm referring to the white light that is off to the side slightly.

Forgot to note that I'm not using the charger at the moment.

Yes, as mentioned above, the white light in question is the confirmation that the FPGA is valid for the board it is inserted on... No way to disable, and nothing to worry about (unless it is NOT lit)

Nice...I have a Hugo for less than 2 weeks now, but I'm enjoying the heck out of it
L3000.gif

This are my prefences so far with DX90 as (coaxial) transport:
HP: Grado PS500 > Audeze LCD2 > Sony MDR-Z7
IEM: Sony XBA-Z5 > Tralucent 1plus2 > 1964Ears V6 Stage (universal)
I know it's not logic that the PS500 and Z5 are on top, because they're surely not the most expensive ones...but it's just what my ears and brain tell me

Also ordered a 10BA universal iem today, so I'm curious if that one will dethrone the Z5 in a few weeks...

Have fun tomorrow with your new Hugo!
