I guess iRiver customer service is hit or miss.  I have sent 5 or 6 emails over a six month period and have yet to hear back once.  I also called the US number numerous times probably 20 or so and it just rings and rings.

Hi chaps. I've just got my AK240 RMA back. It's on fw 1.16. I read a few weeks (months?) back that one of the fw versions didn't seem to sound too popular with sound. Which version was that? Is that all resolved in fw 1.18 (the current latest)? i.e. recommendations to upgrade to 1.18 or hang on to 1.16?

I'm pretty sure 1.16 was the suspect version. I didn't update my unit until 1.17 and now 1.18.

Fwiw I had been on 1.15 for the longest of time, then 1.16, and now 1.18 and never had any issue with all these versions.

1.16 is the one where a lot of people heard a change in sound from 1.15

Thx folks. Yes it seems on pg 355 here that someone mentioned 1.16 is like a bass-light version of the more preferred 1.15. However (aside from bugs), has the signature of 1.17 & 1.18 changed back to similar to 1.15 or does the signature trend continue from 1.16 to 1.17 & 1.18?

I feel that 1.18 sucked the air out of the treble, as compared to 1.17. Still waiting for a new firmware or go back to 1.1.7 if i know how to... 95% of music are dsd on my ak240.

Hmmm...ok, So :-

* 1.15 -> 1.16- bass reduced
* 1.17 -> 1.18 - treble is reduced

So all we have left is mids :wink:? Sure we got this right!?!? Sounds a little sus. Hehehe.

You sure about that? I didn't have the chance to listen to 1.17 'cause I bricked my AK240 at that time, but 1.18 came out merely 11 days after 1.17 so I would think their SQ being the same.

i think it was a fix for certain treble burst/distortion with DSD on 1.18 but consequently removed the airiness.

Maybe you will get 1.19 with mids reduced and everything will be in harmony again :)
