That's my problem with it too. That and the lil buldge at the bottom makes it awkward with an amp. If it weren't for those drawbacks it'd be near the perfect DAP, especially if you want to combine it with an amp.

Maybe slow with indexing or scanning files but that only happens the first time the device run a fullscan. Succeeding scan when you add a few song should not be a problem.

As long as it does not affect playback performance which is what the device do (should do) 99%.

An external storage at least allows you to add bigger capacity in the future.

Yes I'm aware of that as I owned the DX100 for well over a year, and media scanner kicked in everytime I rebooted it, unplugged it from the PC, and inserted a microSD card. The ZX1 is an Android device, therefore the process can't be avoided, and does the same too.
 
The AK-series gives the user an option to manually scan or not.

I actually said similar words when I had the DX100 but it was more in reference to how I'd personally use it for myself. But I wouldn't expect other users to be that tolerant and may want to switch around tracks more as it's their prerogative on how they want to use it. I dare speculate a fair proportion of DX100s sold in the classifieds was due to their performance rather than SQ.

Does the latest firmware load all your music in a reasonable time after it switches on though? I hated waiting 10 minutes for it all to load every time and keeping it switched on meant the battery would go flat within 5 hours.

S-Pro master is just a class D output amp with all the good and bad that can come with it. Class D amps aren't generally favored for home use but it seems they got it pretty right for this purpose. Best one I heard for home use had a linear power supply and good size output chokes. Not things that we'll see here. They are very efficient but Sony haven't reinvented the wheel. They made their 1st class D amplifier almost 40 years ago. It's not new tech.
 
Makers like FiiO and IBasso can choose from a variety of devices and proven tech. Even using output coupling caps has certain advantages over active dc cancelling. Everything is trade offs, including the Super Duper S-Pro Master Blaster amplifier. Sorry, it's not a dig of the device, just the marketing terminology to be bantered about by fans.
  I don't think we should tell others what storage type will suffice just because it does for you. With 24/192 files 128gb will you'll get about 60 albums. Try streaming 24/192 wirelessly. It may not work as well as you suppose and you're now carrying 2 devices around. 
 That said, I think it's great that you found your personal perfect DAP.

I'm not trying to derail the thread here but my experience with these Sony players have been very positive.  The digital amp section on the Sony is usually less powerful than the iBasso DX100, DX50 and even the X3; however, they have proven to sound very refined out of my JH13pro and my Shure SE535.  I do understand that the code name "S-Master Pro" is just a gimmick but the technology in itself and the continuing improvements from one generation to another have been very impressive.  The current digital amp in the ZX-1 is the third iteration of its kind and I'm exciting to receive mine.  I hope iBasso will improve on its UI and responsiveness of the their players.  I was very disappointed about the DX50 initially (first batch here), but I'm glad that they made right with their customer in the end.  I also own the DX100 at one point and absolutely love the sound, sadly I couldn't stand the constant crashing and sold it after a month of ownership.  
 
Yes, 128gb is enough for me and 100 albums at 24/96 is delightful for an on the go listening.  24/192 is for my home use.  YMMV.

i have experience only with older walkmans(non android ones)
 
e474 and s-545(if i remember correctly)
both lack the s-master tech but i can confirmone thing,they are both inferior to clip+ except the eq options which are fantastic.rockbox gives moe options but sound gets muddy if u use it.
 
maybe the s-master makes a diff,i had no experience

I also demoed the f887 at sony store when i was out shopping. I didnt think its any impressive or immediate superior to the dx50. I was interested to purchase for usb out transport. It was a brief demo in a noisy store. I find it pretty much the same as my xperia z phone walkman but with higher vol control.

the inability of sony to publish the specifications and performance data of dac used sort of confirms this too

I welcome iBasso venture into the more portable Saber based player. It will be interesting to see exactly what they will create, it will for sure make people stop and see what this device can do. Sure 128gb is lots of space for most of us but 10 MB was a lot of space many years ago. I believe they have realized that our libraries are growing with the times and providing a card reader is one way to expand on it. It's hard to refute that fact. It has been my first modern player with the expandable space and when you have been exposed to it, it's hard to go back to fixed.

I re-encoded my 24/96-192 files to 24/48 and 24/88-172 to 24-44. I was able to fit my whole music collection on a 128GB SD Card (via extender/adapter) on DX50 with around 10GB to spare. They are non-destructive re-encoding and honestly don't sound any different from the original files. I suppose ZX1 could work out after all.

I only need to demo it with my JH16 to see if fits my taste.

After much deliberating, I decided that I wasn't that interested in the sony zx1. I decided that what I need right now is something that is basically a high end in one box solution , something like the hm901, so yeah I guess i am pretty interested in this product. I have the dx50 and its a pretty fun product, too many quirks though, I want to see what ibasso could do with this one, especially with their player track record

I'd like for something that can take 2 SD cards.   64GB simply isnt enough and I much prefer the DX50 ergonomics to the FiiO.

1-set of side buttons (that would be swell)
