Aurisonics ROCKETS: Impressions Thread
Jan 3, 2014 at 12:55 PM Post #136 of 3,454
How does the rocket compares with your jh13, k3003 and f111 in terms of SQ, soundstage and details? I know it's not a fair comparison, but you're the only who has heard it so far :)

I didn't have any of those iems with me when I heard the rockets and my audition wasn't all that long- maybe 15, 20 minutes, so I can't really give any comparisons until I get my pair and spend more time with it.

I remember thinking it sounded smoother and less peaky up top, compared to my memory of the asg-2. It also had more even keeled bass than the asg-2- less mid bass quantity and again smoother overall. The midrange was the best part and the main focus ime. Vocals and guitars sounded upfront with good intimacy and engagement.

The tunning with the tighter, less present bass reminded me a little of the re262 overall tuning, if you flattened the 262's upper mid peak around 2k and added overall bass quantity. My best description with that limited audition was a midcentric and smooth but detailed sound.

People seriously underestimate single drivers all of a sudden.

I definitely dont underestimate iems with less drivers. Just kind of hard to convince myself why i need these as i dont really have a use for them... keep telling myself to get it for my girlfriend... but that's not actually a reason... ...

can anyone link me to where shotgunshane posted some impressions?

even though its 130 dollars now... im still sorta EHHH on the fence. someone convince me

Edit: or help me save my wallet...

Same, could have jumped on the $99, but I'm hesitating quite a bit... Was set to have my next IEM a hybrid universal custom type...

How convenient... Aurisonics offers a hybrid universal iem... ... ...

LOL...  I jumped on the offer.  The issue here, though, is that you're basing your purchase on a single impression.  Do you really want to do that?  As of right now, the result will be a gamble either direction.  It could either pay off or backfire on you.  If you have the extra funds, I'd just say go for it.  If you won't have the funds to spare by February 2 (that's when they will charge you), then wait I guess.

Hybrids are fun and all, but the driver configuration isn't what makes or breaks and IEM.  I've seen single drivers compete with quad drivers, or even dual drivers compete well.  Right now, my go-to IEM is a single-drivered dynamic from HiFiMan.

Your definition of "neutral" fits Etymōtic's; I fear it doesn't fit mine. If I record someone's voice with a very linear microphone (an omni, to avoid any proximity effect) and the sound I get from the ER4 is noticeably thinner than real life, there's a problem. Try to mix with the ER4 and you'll end unnaturally boosting the bass to compensate.

I don't have an ER4, but do use the HF5.  I personally have no problem with the bass of the HF5 (although it needs better presence), my problems still lies in the treble being overly fatiguing, they still need to attenuate it a couple dB everywhere past the 4-5 kHz range for those really poorly recorded albums...

LOL, yup, in the northwest 'burbs (I'm actually 15 minutes from Etymotic headquarters XD).  And I think that could be arranged if you really want to drive up here XD

It's a dynamic driver so the single driver shouldn't really be an issue. There's been some very good single drivers dynamic as well as BA.

I'm actually finding the ER-4 to be incredibly forgiving of poorly mastered and bad quality files. Moreso than most of my other IEMs.

I'm currently in possession of two such examples.

Was actually thinking of Merlins... ASG hybrids is more expensive, and I don't get to customize the plates :)

Oh I know, I had a FAD single driver which does well against triple drivers but I just wanted something different than the usual multi BA or dynamic driver type IEMs.

I don't get what drives all the hate on a single-driver IEM.  People tend to not realize that more drivers != better sound.

I haven't heard the ER4, I should eventually get one though.  I hear its (the ER4P) tamer than the HF5 though, which could be the reason for it.

Hey did you pick up a pair of rockets?

Yes I did. I got pretty lucky I checked here. For some reason I thought they kickstarter went live an hour actually it did and saw that it was live so got it at the $99 price. I'm thinking these will be good for my gym use.

Ok, I just backed for $129... Silly me should have just jumped on the $99... I've forgotten I still have the chance to pull out before Feb should I chicken out

Do Merlins come as universals now? Ive heard that if you contact them sometimes they'll let it happen. I have no clue tho.

Also, you CAN give your aurisonics a lil customization if you contact them. My ASG-2 is a little different from the usual two solor schemes. Stealth still looks amazing anyways
