On a mission to like jazz
Dec 21, 2015 at 10:42 PM Post #1,456 of 5,031
I have some big band Cd's from way back, but I prefer Smooth Jazz ('80-'90's) various artists so I can get a little taste of each artist then take it from there. I already know who I like, but I don't like much of their newer music, such as Chris Botti/Walter Beasley/Peter White/Bob James/David Sanborne/Euge Groove/Eric Marienthal/Jessy J/Kirk Whalum/Marc Antoine/Brian Culbertson…and the list goes on. So this really the type of Jazz I enjoy.

Okay, give these a try...

Chuck Loeb
Alex Bugnon
Chris Standring
Dan Siegel
Grant Geissman
Keiko Matsui
Jeff Golub
Joyce Cooling
Ken Navarro
Mike Phillips
Ray Obiedo
Urban Knights

Love Jarret, especially in his "Standards" trios.

Agreed ....Jarrett and the "Standards" absolute wonderful stuff.  I consider him to be the "creme de la creme" of todays top Jazz pianists.

Lest we forget Bill Evans, Tyner, Mulgrew Miller or even Bill Charlap who can throw down a head spinning chord structure now and then.

The list goes on and on in many respects.

Admittedly Mehldau seems to be the best of todays current crop of talent, a shame though that as far as Trio's go you still cant beat that fantastic Evans, Gomez, Morrell magic (although Jarrett, DeJohnette and Peacock come awfully close) .

Great to see this thread alive and well

Thank you…when I mentioned the list goes on, I would have included these artists…I'm familiar with them and like them all!
Thanks again.

You're welcome.  Let's try a different approach. Send me a PM with a list of artist of that genre you know, and I'll see if I can come up with a list of new artists for you.

Love Jarret, especially in his "Standards" trios.
Not sure I agree with the "saccharine comfort zone" assessment on Meldhau, but I guess that Is in the ear of the beholder. The usual rap on him I've heard is not that he's not experimental or pushes boundaries, but that he's a bit too clinical for some (not to me, have to say).
Speaking of comfort zones, I have really developed an appreciation of Jarrett, and really enjoy the solo and trio recordings, but "comfort zone" could certainly describe the cushy, gospel tinged simple things he falls back on in his solo recordings. Just sayin'...different strokes, and all...

I agree with you on the Jarrett solo stuff.

+1 on Chuck Loeb.  Saw him live with Four Play last year.  That man puts his whole being into playing that guitar.

Many quality hours listening to Standring, Cooling, and Golub too.

Nice!
Chuck Loeb is a member of Fourplay since 2010 of Fourplay which is my favorite Contemporary Jazz band.

If you're a fan of Fourplay, I assume you already own Fourplay bassist Nathan East's solo record that he released this year? I'm not a fan of 'smooth' Jazz, but this record's a keeper. Highly recommended!

This one?

or this one?

Not yet, but I'm going to.
I've been listening to samples of Cd's from all the members past/current to hear which ones I like. Also as I said earlier, I did just get their "Silver" Cd and I'm enjoying it very much. Thanks for the tip…I was last listening to Lee Ritenour, but I'll check out Nathan East solo.

I don't have it yet either - but my local FM Jazz station plays it quite a bit.  Incidentally the Four Play concert (Eastman Theater in Rochester NY in 2014) was the best Jazz concert I have ever seen, and I have seen many.

Thank you.
The only two artists I'm familiar with are Chieli Minucci/Incignitio and I'm familiar with the Rippingtons, just not the members.
Now I have some other artists to explore and see if I like them.
Thanks again,
Joseph
