The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016

Try it.  I'm liking it.  We use basically the same amp, and I'm not hearing "darker."  I'm getting more punch in the low end using the Dunus.  Fills up the sound, but it's certainly not overpowering it or making it muddy.  Treble is still fine (I tried Taxman by the Beatles, my go-to for "almost too bright," and it is still right on the edge.  Stuff by Buffalo Springfield, which is a bit thin, gained a slight bit of "deeper," while stuff by George Michael, which is already plenty deep, gained more punch in the area of kick drum.  Vocals are fine, mids are fine.  I think 7S Cameron got it right, above, when he said the bass is improved.  I tried one of the earlier custom firmwares, which I found both too bass-y and too shrill.  This is neither.  If you were willing to try the "sound explosion," even though you reverted back to 1.2.8, you REALLY should try the 1.5.  C'mon, you've never led ME astray, I'm just returning the favor.

Damn this thread moved fast. I'll give it try mate, I actually went back to sound explosion today and very much enjoy it with a range of IEM. I'm just flat out atm organising some things.

No click click here with Gapless on or off.

H2OFidelity- I think you will like it.

To those who say the new firmware is too dark, I really don't hear what you're implying.  It's fuller, yes, because of the increased bass frequencies, but the mids and highs are right there, and vocals seem a bit more forward.  It's not a neutral sound, now it's got punch.  But I've listened to a wide variety of my favorite (and well-known) music with it and don't sense any sort of darkness.

I didnt do a factory reset, but I just did one. Ill see if it will repeat. In the mean time, 90 minutes of listening and no more problems though. maybe it was just a fluke

Also, just curious, if I want to compare EQ on / EQ off sound, does anyone know how many volume steps are equal to 6db? or does it depend on the phones?

It is 11 steps to match the volume. That is 0.5db per step and it is actually 5.5db difference overall.

Loving 1.5 firmware sound now. Def' no need for EQ unlike 1.2.8. Doc2008 MSE was better than1.2.8 but I prefer 1.5 to anything so far.

Shame about the still unsigned 64x driver for USB DAC. Wonder how much Microsoft are charging?

I'm using Windows 7 so I don't think I need to deal with the no signature issue. I might just wait until iBasso fix the install issue though, it's a bit frustrating since I think I've tried at least 12 times by now. Thanks for the help anyways guys.

you're right..the only thing that i noticed when i run the installation was a pop up message asking me if i would like to install an unsigned driver..i clicked yes continue then it asked for a restart..after the restart, shove my dx50 back and configure foobar..well it worked..did listen to it for an hour..problem is everything is dark so i went back to mega sound explosion lol

Thanks for the info. I though the EQ cut 6 dB though? is it only 5.5? (not that it really matters, im just curious)

Also, does anyone know if a signed driver is in the plans, or is the driver just 'is what it is'?

As others have noticed, I have witnessed some stutter on the new firmware.  Though for me it hasn't been random, and wasn't happening during normal gapless playback of individual albums.  But if I let the unit idle for some time, then go play something it might give a slight stutter shortly after it starts playing.  If I restart that same song from the beginning it doesn't stutter again in the same place.  Previous firmware did not do this at all.  It also apparently may stutter if messing with the pause/play button during playback.  It's a very slight stutter, just like one ever so slight hiccup, but does remind me of computer behavior.

I manged to get the dac driver working.

Here is what i did. I hope it helps those who have trouble installing it.
I'm running windows 8.1 64bit, but I'm sure this procedure should work with other window system.

Jump to 7 if your not running windows 8.1
For Windows 8.1 user you have disable driver signature enforcement first.
1. Hold onto shift on your keyboard, then press restart.
2. Troubleshoot
3. Advanced Option
4. Startup Setting
5. Press 7
6. You have disabled your driver signature enforcement.
7. Right click my computer then select property/go to control panel
8. Open device manager.
9. Install 1.5.0 on your dx50
10. In usb setting switch select dac mode.
11. Connect your dx50 to your pc
12. In the device manger you should see an unknown device called 2kxxx(forgot the exact name, but you should know it is the dx50)
13. right click that -> select update driver
14. browse driver from your pc
15. Extract the dx50/90 beta 2 driver downloaded from the ibasso website.
16. If your running 64bit choose the 64x folder/ 32bit choose the 86x folder. (make sure sub-directory is included)
17. Once the driver is installed, you should see mango device.
18. Right click the sound icon on your taskbar
19. click on playback devices
20. Select ibasso mango hifi audio device as default device
21. Enjoy

I am convinced that my work computer will just not allow me to do this.  All the drivers are successfully installed, but I can't get the device to show up as a playback device.  Device manager shows them as disabled devices due to lack of signature and can't be enabled.  Disabling driver enforcement for me just allowed me to install them, but after they're installed Windows still silently wants to ban them from running.  It's really quite silly.  lol

I really like the sound explosion firmware to be honest, completely changed my opinion on DX50 headphone out. It sounds really wide, spacious and clean with most of my IEM. I think it's great we have a few firmwares to play with.

Put new 1.5.0 firmware on this morning. Just listened to a few albums on my dog walk today and have to say I like it very much, keyboards, guitars and brass sound phenomenal. Vocals may be a bit more out there but after really liking 1.2.8 more than any other firmware I'm sold.

I am experiencing the same difficulty on my Windows 8.1 system, 64 bit. Booted into Advanced Options, no signature, installed Mango usb, and it now shows as Mango USB installed driver. However, Mango USB does not show up as a choice in Playback Devices, and in the Devices and Printers window it is still showing as rk2928sdk. I will wait for the official iBasso signed driver release.

No, I have to go into the device manager to check.

So I tried uninstalling and then installing the driver software over and over again, still no banana.

i re-installed it and realised that i couldnt playback any files on my com or on youtube. everything just crashed

There is no need to perform any uninstall. If the installation failed the dx50 doesn't get recognized as mango device. Right click the 2kxxx update the driver through browsing the drivers from your PC. Once installation completed mango device should appear.

Executing the setup exe doesn't work even in signature enforcement disabled mode. I had to install it through device manager.

BucketIInBUcket that's not the device manager...

Guys,

I have RockBox installed and iam really enjoying it,

but seeing lots of firmwares like the sound explosion and 1.5 makes me eager to try them,

so i need to ask users that enjoy rockbox, is it really worthy to try the sound of any of these firmwares ??

and i really don't care about sluggishness of the gui or anything but the sound.
