Shure SE846 Impressions Thread

I just try the exact same set up as yours. MBP 15" + Chord Hugo + SE846 = Zero hiss.

Here is what I tried in my office this morning. I close my door and make sure my colleague talks quietly, so room is dead quiet.
There is an almost inaudible hiss.. very very faint. Almost nothing.. I did not really hear hiss, I heard a sense of space instead of hiss. This is done with music pause and volume at max.

I think its better to send it back for a re-check. The chord Hugo is design for IEM, there should not be any hiss.

Thanks so much for trying this out, especially during work hours. Your experience has been really helpful.

And yeh, it does seem like something is not quite right on my end. I'm definitely hearing obvious hissing with the exact same setup, even when the Hugo's volume is turned way down, regardless of whether the music was playing, paused, or not playing. Rob Watts advised me to use the inline volume attenuator, which dramatically reduced the background noise, however, the sound quality noticeably suffered when using the attenuator.

On the other hand, when I change my setup to MBP + Woo Audio WA7 + 846 = no hiss even at maxed out volume.

What model of MBP are you two using? That's not insignificant. Hardware changes a lot between models.

After chatting with my Chord dealer and considering yours and others opinions and experiences, I think that what I'm hearing is probably normal. On further consideration, I'm really hearing - as you so accurately put it - a sense of space rather than hiss or a 'sssss' sound. I'm sorry to have misled everyone - i'll chalk it up to my lack of experience with sensitive headphones and iems. What I'm hearing is probably just the noise floor of the Chord Hugo due to the very high sensitivity of the 846. This can be dramatically reduced with the inline attenuator but the attenuator degrades the SQ to my ears. The noise floor without the attenuation is something that I can certainly live with because I really am getting a pretty phenomenal sound with this pairing, especially the bass and midrange . The 846 is definitely a keeper.

Thanks very much to all those who have generously given me advice, support, and tested out various combinations!

Hi all. I'm contemplating a purchase of 846s or TG334s. Can anyone provide insights into which might be preferable for a very wide range of genres focussed around rock, blues, jazz and funk with minimal electronic and classical.

Both so which one can you get right now? Get that one then the other later.

That's a nice way of looking at it and kind of where I'm at. I can buy 846s now from classifieds for $900 and close to me here in Melbourne. I figure I can then sell them later if I want to "upgrade" to 334 or just save up and own both as you say.

I really liked the 5 driver Fitear it has similar bass to the 846.
