The Astell & Kern AK120

Just placed an order today for this one!

Nearly went for the 901 but the DSD sealed it for me, should be here in 2-3 weeks as its coming from the States.
I have Etymotic ER4S's. FAD Heaven S, FAD Piano Forte IX , Beyerdynamic T5P and DT1350's to use with this though the T5P's and the IX's will be used mainly in conjunction with my ASP TU-05 tube amp and the AK120 so that will leave the other three for use directly out of the DAP. Does anyone have any experience with these headphones and this DAP?

That's why I mentioned it. He's not kidding when he says it's the least 'digital' sounding slope, all things being equal.

A linear phase filter or any type that has pre-ringing is not going to sound as natural as a filter that doesn't have this issue (minimal phase).

More impressive than its superior technical specifications (e.g. 8db greater SNR and Dynamic Range) compared to the WM8740, the WM8741 can be configured to use a “minimal phase digital filter” for the data prior to d/a conversion. Unlike most d/a converter chips that use a standard linear phase digital filter, the WM8741’s selectable minimal phase digital filter has no “pre-ringing” of its impulse response. Pre-ringing is an unnatural side effect of using a linear phase digital filter. Real instruments do not ring before they are excited – a guitar doesn’t produce sound before a string is plucked, a piano doesn’t not produce a sound before a key is pressed, and the impulse response of a minimal phase filter does not have pre-ringing and therefore produces a more natural sound.

I have yet to hear any dac (even higher-end home audio components) that sounds more natural and less "digital" with a linear phase filter - but this is just my opinion.

When we've teamed up with Bricasti at the shows and used their M1 dac (It's close to $10k and like their M7 reverb unit, it's purchased by recording studios that care about how a recording turns out!), we always prefer using their minimal phase settings over any of their linear phase settings.  I'm glad the WM8741 has this digital filter option!

No reason why it shouldn't work great. I didn't care about the dsd but the package of size, performance, storage and amp setup for more efficient earphones works for me.

I'm a big fan of the Naim DAC and they do their own filters as well. Those brick wall filters were/are about getting #s. Nice to see ears taking back over.

I love Naim DAC and CD players, but you must listen to Metrum NOS DACs, either Octave or Hex (i did not hear the latter). All i can say Voices and Piano and Strings never sounded more natural... Octave flattened me, gosh i wish i could believe in miracle because never ever i heard so natural breathing voices, never irrespective of equipment i heard... Even Naim DAC could not convey voices in this way despite throwing a larger stage and authority.

I have listened to the DT1350 and it is fine sounding from the AK120. However, I have yet to try the PF-IX.....I may try it tonight just before I send my 120 to Vinnie tomorrow..............

I will be buying the HEX very soon for my desktop set up

Thats great, thank you! I am looking forward to your thoughts with the PF's though to be truthful those will more likely be used in combination with the amp.

Oh, with the Mahler's, which one is suitable for this player? I see DSF and DFF. I have no idea what the difference is though.

DSF is the better choice to download...has metadata for your media player on the PC/Mac and make things easier for filing...although it doesn't actually get recognized on the AK120!

Thats what I thought but if it is not recognized how would I convert it? I have XLD and Weiss Saracon for soft wear.

Ah! Thanks, Having lived with the 801 and realized I do not miss images that is not an issue, I take it that is the metadata, the track listing would show though?
