Sennheiser MOMENTUM Review

I consider the M50 earpads size ideal over ear - it's neither too big "over whole head" nor too small "squeeze your ears in" - just perfect size :D Maybe engineers at Sennheiser all have small ears...:D

Can anyone here give me a comparison between the original Sennheiser Momentums and the new On-Ear Momentums?

I was on a mission today to try out some Sennheiser Momentums at my local audio supplies shop.
It's true, everything everyone is saying (I'm a believer HALLELUJAH) It's really a beautiful set of headphones with the exact type of sound I was looking for with all of the comfort I need for my lifestyle, but the beauty of these headphones just left me with more questions.

The big question is now,

What is the difference between the sound of the classic Momentums and their brand new On-Ear Momentums?
Has anyone listened to both? Are the on-ears comparable to the originals? Is there a BIG difference? Are the on-ears more comfortable because they are lighter weight than the larger size?
The originals will cost me around $311 and the On-ears will be about $230.

I know the original Momentums are worth the price, but what about the on-ears? Which is a better investment in your opinion? I don't record or dj or mix. It would just be for my personal listening pleasure, but I'm sick of settling for the sound quality of "the average consumer"
I've heard the best and now I want it.

Thank you so much for your input!

I find the original momentum to have a more forward mid range and less bass response than it's little brother. It's more detailed and is just overall a better headphone. That said the little on ears are great, Bass is thumping mids have a little less presence but not recessed by any means. It's just a little less balanced than the momentum. Over here in the UK the momentum are £260 while the on ear are £169. The momentum(still great sounding) are really over priced and I believe the on ear are the better bargain! just my opinion.

Either that or in their pursuit to compete with Beats they made huge compromises for style. I don't think that the same engineers that made the open HD series suddenly developed a case of ear shrinkage. The COP and M50 are normal size over-ear, the Audeze cans are abnormally large. The Momentum is neither here or there.

Yeah but no, these should be marketed as on-ear. My COP swallows them. I find the Momentum terrible, comfort wise, I can feel the driver ridges on my ears. The driver should be flush or there should be a thicker padding on it.

I agree with Speakerphile, my pair fits me fine...and it sucks that they don't fit you.  However, I also agree with you - they should have put thicker padding...that would have solved a lot of problems.

1stly, momentum are so light that it is primarily for portable on-the-go audiophile set of headphone, I found the design and finish to be refined and good looking, comfort is relative, I can feel that it is cosy on my ears but at the same time feel secure, comfortable during rush hours of train ride. And, sound quality of momentum is definitely good, it is very refined, the only complain that most people are unable to explain is that the soundstage is rather small, upfront, and quite congested. If you're comparing this with beyer COP, you're comparing apples to oranges. Although I myself walk around with my Beyer COP but i don't think average people would want to walk around with huge big headphone with slight advantage of huge soundstage(btw tonal color of COP is quite mudddy if compared side-by-side with momentum) . So, please get the right mindset and headphone correctly before trying to compare them. Sound quality is subjective too, but most reliable source would be a recommendation from a trained Musician, I am one,

*Omnomnom* :3

Jokes aside, It fits me well and the earpads are actually quite thick (in both width and height, which is also why the earhole is so small)
The fit is a bit tight/snug I have to say, so i can imagine those with big ears having problems.
Also the momentum is marketed as a portable on ear headphone,so it can't be big like a COP of or even stick out like a grado.
Soundwise I think these are really good for the portable category, among the best available with the sound being warm and not fatiguing. It is no way boomy as some people have said before, in fact i feel that the bass is a little bit on the low side for me.

I didn't even touch on sound quality, I was strictly debating the comfort level, and for me, without adequate comfort I can't even begin to consider sound.

The bass is definitely lacking when compared to the COP. Some say it's not lacking, it's just tight and controlled but after you feel the COP tingle the top of your ears the Momentum sounds flat. Not my cup of tea.

Yeah, Momentum are truly over-advertised.

Bass, what bass? There is no bass extension at all. I tested them and they don't go below 80Hz. They will respond to 50 or 30Hz signal, but if you measure the output it will probably be ~80Hz. Great heaphones for people liking boomy bass. I can imagine the on-ear version probably can't go below 100Hz.

Are they really so detailed? I don't think you'd see much of the difference between MP3 and hi-rez 24bit audio.

Momentum are really great headphones. They do have a style. They are comfy as long as your ears fit inside. They are great on the go. But they definitely are not detailed, their bass is definitely not great, and no, they are not good enough to use them with your home hi-fi rig, and there definitely are some cheaper headphones that will sound way better with that rig. In the portable domain however it is still hard to find better closed over-ear pair. Most portables are on-ear, and it's neither good sound, nor good comfort. There are bigger closed cans, but their portability is under question. Personally I found my self preferring on the streets the CX300II with comply foams and good s/w equalization rather than Momentum. In fact I don't use them any more. Only sometimes with this laptop, since they are not so big, and I can put them aside on the table...

I agree with the over advertised. I think they are fantastic but very over priced. I prefer the DT770 it's a more musical and lively headphone with amazing bass and in the Uk the momentum are more than double the price!! But to be fair they are sort of competing with other consumer headphones. I do like the momentum though I think they are really good headphones, If I had to nit pick I'd say they sound too congested to the point the music can sound a tad muddled.

Ok, but DT700 are huge, thus their portability is under question. Do you actually walk out in DT770? And what about mids, I think I've read here people complaining on recessed mids of DT770. If so them I prefer Momentum...
