Just reading up on these and it seems a lot of people refer to the Vmoda cable as being a good replacement. Is it just this cable at the link below for $12:

Didn't see anywhere which said exactly what cable it was.

Yep, that's what I use. The cable is very high quality and looks nice. I chose a red/black (interleaved) color cable. In hindsight, I should have gone for a grey/black color combo to match the rest of my equipment, red looks a little weird on a black/silver headphone.

Thanks, much appreciated. Good point on the color as well, I will stick with a neutral one now.

So I just placed an order for X1s on amazon (fire sale :))

1) A couple of questions for you guys ... Read that I better change the couple. Doing some research, I came across the following two:

http://v-moda.com/audio-only-cable/  [thanks dukespecial] $12
http://v-moda.com/coilpro-cable/   $30

Which one should I go for?

2) Do these require major break-in? If so, how much time do they require?

Thanks!

2) Yes, ~150-200h playtime will get them "in shape" for proper listening.

How much did your X1s on fire sale cost? If you don't mine me asking? I got mine used like new from an Amazon seller and it cost me $175 after all the shipping and taxes and whatnot.

They do? These have sounded great to me since I got them. I got mine used, but they were like new so I would guess probably less than 10 hours on them. I've probably only put 50-60 hours on them so far. Loving the sound sig for my electronic library.

Yeah, they have almost same behaviour like X2, they will get better. And they pair nicely with tube amp or tube buffered dac.
I haven`t found genre yet that doesn`t suit for X1 and I mostly listen very complex progressive rock / metal. But I also enjoy electronic music with them much. With better cable + proper matching dac/amp they are very very good all-arounders.

40 hours is when I noticed a significant improvement.

Oh man, you're nuts. My red/black V-moda cable looks absolutely gorgeous with my X1's. Red cable with the brown leather & silver aluminum accents is the most aesthetic combination I've ever encountered on a headphone.

I posted this in the help and recommendation forum:

I am looking for a headphone that has similar characteristics but be a huge step forward. I was looking at the HD650 but from everything I've read they don't seem to be a leap at all and some feel the X1's are superior. I have already owned the HD 700's and though I liked them at the time I was too new to the audiophile world to appreciate them. I would consider owning the HD 700s again or go to the 800s, but I feel like there might be another progressive step out of the X1's.

I personally find the X1's a 6.5/10 in comfort as they are heavy and they are a little small, I max out the headband. I am looking for headphones that are lighter and bigger have similar sound but are a massive step forward. I am not looking for a minor upgrade to say the X2 but more of a major upgrade out of Mid-Fi and into Hi-Fi. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Each to its own... imo this is most aesthetic combination I have ever encountered on headphone

Haha, didn't know I'd get so much flack for disliking the color combo.

My workspace is an ocean of brushed aluminum with black accents - Lian-Li cases galore (4 on the desks alone). The only thing with any color is the red/black cable I have. It's fine, but I might have done it a different way. I honestly debated between buying two cables just because I couldn't decide what looks best. Now that I think about it.. I suppose the rest of the components in my main desktop have red accents as well (mobo, grakka)... maybe it matches.

My cable also isn't as dark as CoiL's, the red is a lot brighter. It's the same color/pattern as this:

It was $169.99 + tax (I know, it sucks to pay tax on amazon now) but I actually paid a bit lower since I had some cashback rewards that I managed to use to bring it down to $162.
