HM-901

Just listened to 901 for a couple of hours after receiving it today~ :)

I am with Michael on this one, the depth and layer is really special that no other portable device can offer, specially with Fen Li card.

Minibox card is generally a little brighter with tighter bass. Both sound really good~With Fen li card has a little more authority.

I am so "smart" getting a 901 back :p
Enjoy...the 901 is really special. Not letting it go unless Vinnie really played some magic on the AK240. But my question is where on earth did you get a fenli? Give me yours and I might not hurt you.

You using the new version yellow discrete card or the old version?  You should also try Hugo, which is finally something I feel has better sound than the 901 in the portable arena. (but then it isn't really portable... more like transportable)

Yes, the yellow one :)

I was on the tour of Hugo like 2 weeks ago and I had it for a week at home to listen to it. It is one of the best source I have ever heard especially with my SE5.  I almost got myself one, however I went with 901 instead because I need something to listen on the road. But I agree Hugo is almost portable, the size is amazing you can just carry it around when you need to. I will definitely consider it in the future.

BTW, 901 doesn't play WAV?...

Hugo is technically superior but so different IMO that is not comparable...901 is warm and musical yet balanced, with great depth. Hugo is more clinical yet still musical, at least to my ears.

Come on, it's really not that hard when you are located in China. plenty of them flowing around, I will let you know if any of my friend in China is selling one.

Actually with both fenli or minibox, the sound is very neutral only with a very slight touch of hifiman house sound. It's almost 100% neutral really to my ears.

My friend who sold me this 901 said he compared all the 8 cards, and decided to keep the fenli and minibox.  He said the IEM and balanced card are a little veiled compared to these two (he has SE5). I don't have one to compare now, so I really can't comment on them.

Well lucky you.  I went thru some hell to get my hands on one as the original maker got issue receiving my alipay payment last time with the first version and refused to deal with overseas clients..... so I need to find someone from 2nd hand market willing to ship it outside of china and who isn't charging an arm and a leg.  Some of them was even asking for as high as RMB1500!

Yes, AK240 can get as hot if put in pocket or in a pouch. AK240 is actually hotter if playing dsd. The metallic body also conduct heat better so it feels hotter on your thigh when it's in your pocket. However if put on a table with good ventilation, 901 is hotter than AK240.

Hotter than a 901 on balance? Didn't know that. Thought 901 was the leader by a mile in the cooking-eggs-via-DAP department.

Yup, can cook more eggs than the 901 if you play DSD on the AK240 without ventilation (e.g. when it's in your pocket).... :D  using the leather case would mitigate it somewhat as it shield away the hot metal casing. 901 still "wins" when playing 16/44 to 24/192 materials....

Eggs and sausage in this case.

Hmm.. But if it's like this, I think not putting it in the leather case when playing DSD would be a better choce. The heat needs to get out. Trapping it in won't be good for your DAP.

In general yes, but since I'm using it in my pants pocket most of the time, it won't get ventilation anyway and putting more layers between the ak240 and skin is more important....

Yellow is the revised/newer version. :)

New one is more refined/mellow, old one is more raw/powerful sounding imo. I think of them more as different cards than different version of the same card. (In fact the old one has 3 versions and the pictured one should be the 3rd and final version)...
