Of the 350 or so posts I’ve written since I became a Head-Fi member, this post is probably going to be my most important, even if it’s only helpful to one other owner of the FitEar ToGo 334.
I got my 334 about 10 months ago, and pretty much after a month or so felt I wasn’t too happy with it, and so began contemplating to sell it. In many ways it sounded quite excellent but too dark, a bit congested at loud volumes, and sometimes somewhat anaemic, and more often than not the stock tips would create an underpressure in my ear canals rendering them not just uncomfortable but also sounding somewhat unnatural, like the sound was being “pumped” into my ears creating all sorts of strange effects. Simply put, it was nowhere near my other TOTL IEMs.
Considering all glowing reviews, all rave, and how this or that cable would make all the difference, I felt utterly dumfounded. However, because of all of those posts - describing the 334 as something like “god’s gift to audiophiles”- I wasn’t ready to give up. I must confess though that in the back of my mind I had a nagging feeling it could actually be a bad case of the old hype. Also, having spent so much money - despite an excellent resale value - I just wasn’t ready to give up. So, I set out on a quest to try to find out what was wrong. I would investigate tips, my sources, my files, and my hearing. Well, to make a very long story very short my quest failed, although not completely. I found out that with my CEntrance 1 Ohm modified DACport (and to some extent with my my iPod Touch generation 4) and - most importantly – a pair of Comply foam tips T-500 I could get some really decent sound out of the 334, perhaps even good enough to keep it. However, as time passed I used my 334 less and less and eventually, not at all.
Now, just a couple of days ago something quite remarkable, completely unexpected and for me revolutionary happened, and it happened more or less by chance. As I was going through my cabinet looking for my backup hard disk, my eyes fell on the FitEar Otterbox and so reminded me that it was due time to put it up for sale. Then I remembered I had some new olive shaped tips that came with my Wooduo 2 from HiSoundAudio. For a moment I hesitated as I wasn’t sure they’d fit the nozzle of the 334. Nevertheless I decided to give it a go.
To my extreme surprise, the 334 sounded like a completely different phone from what I was used to. Most importantly, its resolving capability seemed to have increased by a factor of at least 10, and all of a sudden it had a completely new ability to convey some very real and realistic
(raw) energy in the music, without becoming even the slightest intrusive or congested. Put another way it sounded oh so very musical. Instrument separation became significantly more defined - without any unnatural or exaggerated gaps - and together with the newfound resolution and unparalleled detail retrieval making it easy to discern myriads of fine nuances in every voice and instrument in my reference tracks, especially so in the mid-range; stuff that I hadn’t really noticed or appreciated with any of my other phones. It also sounded more spacious, lush and balanced. I felt that every sound aspect had improved.
Wow! Who would have thought? However, I still wasn’t perfectly happy as the bass was now sounding slightly thin and the treble still a tad lacking. I quickly realised the reason for the lack in bass was that I only had about 95 % or so of a perfect seal in my left ear. Luckily, the Wooduo 2 also came with a pair of large olive shaped tips. Now the bass transformed from being very good to godlike; authoritative and punchy but with fabulous control and without becoming the least overpowering. Combine that with the pristine newfound resolution and I felt it was the best bass I have ever heard. With the T-500 Comply foam tips the bass was outright bloated and uncontrolled compared to this! Still, the treble was a tad lacking, so a decided to do what I usually never do; give it a tad of EQ treble boost. It worked perfectly!
Sitting in my armchair with closed eyes I was in audio heaven and couldn’t stop listening. But my story doesn’t end here; the next step made me fall in love with the 334.
Before I continue I want to apologise for my hype, but I do have a few other TOTL IEMs (check my profile) and my
“Philips Golden Ears” to lean on, so I feel that - at least to some small extent - I’m entitled to some hype.
So, as I was sitting in my comfortable armchair enjoying my audio heaven I then - without thinking about it - tilted my head backwards to make it rest on the headrest, and as I gradually tilted my head the overall improvements in sound
significantly increased again. It seemed to open up the 334 to its full potential. What happened of course was that by tilting my head backwards the shape of my ear canals changed making the tips fit like a glove. At this point I felt ecstatic about the sound being delivered to my ears. I just couldn’t believe it. At the same time it was somewhat disconcerting. Tilting my head backwards for hours wouldn’t just look funny and be impractical, but would quickly become very uncomfortable too (I suffered from pain in the back of my neck for a couple of days after this exercise). Obviously the fit wasn’t perfect after all. The question now was if I could do anything about it. I unplugged the ear tips and then with total focus and closed eyes fitted the tips back into my ears with a slightly different angel and a slightly shallower fit. My heart pounding as I pressed the play button to start the music and hear the result. Yes, yes, and yes, the new glorious sound was all there. The fit now seemed perfect.
After several years in this hobby I know for sure that fit and seal of ear tips is absolutely paramount, and I’m always very particular about it, but I truly had no idea that selection of ear tips could have such a tremendous,
and I mean tremendous impact. Well, let me tell you,
lesson learned! I did order a bunch of MeElectronics’ ear tips for the 334 but none of them worked any better than the stock tips, and that’s probably why I never bothered to order the Ortofon tips mentioned in the thread, but they’re on order now.
My headache now is that I really want a few spares of the Wooduo 2 large olive shaped ear tips. I visited HiSoundAudio’s site but their “store” didn’t seem to work and the site was extremely slow. I’ll include a few pictures of the ear tips in this post with the hope that perhaps any of you will be able to help me identify them and possibly also tell me where I could order them. It would make me very,
very happy! They seem to be made of semi soft rubber and fit nozzles with a diameter of about 4.5 to 5.0 millimetres.
So, if you’re still with me, thank you for reading!
I’m now one very, very happy owner of the FitEar ToGo 334!
