Portable amp below $50?

Oh I thought the E17 is just a newer version. The E7 is already a tad above my price range, so I guess I have an easy choice :D. And I love how if I ever want to upgrade, I can get the E9

Well the E17 is an upgrade in that it has a better amp and DAC in it, but that comes at a cost. It's a very different price bracket though.

nesf has good advice. One thing to add is that the E11 actually has better sound quality than the E7, but if you are planning to get the E9 in the future, you're doing the right thing.

So are u still looking for portabilty? dEsktop or both?
The E17 is both.
And yes. the e11 does have better sound than the E7, as tzjin said.
E17>E10>E11>E7>E6 in terms of sound

For starting audiophiles. It is best to have an ipod. Using an LOD with these is fantastic as you are bypassing the amp. stated above, but jsut adding a small point to it.

Comparing the E17 and E9 combo to desktop amps could be done but i shall remind you is unfair. the combo has teh advantage of being take apart and used portably anywhere you want. you coudl take it to a friends house. use optical(if you have).use USB as an external sound card, headphone amp. whatever

I am trading my second Ety HF5, for the FiiO E7. In the future I plan to get the E9. Good choice? Also, I do not have an iPod :frowning2:. I use my Droid X. WIll that be a problem because there is no LOD for that?

If your source has no way to bypass it's internal DAC, then the E7+E9 combo will be useless, and you may as well just plug it directly into an E9. So unless you want to upgrade your source, you may want to just get an E10 or  an E17 which would be cheaper in the long run.
Alternatively, get the E7 for now, and trade/sell it when you want to further upgrade.

An E10 will only work with a computer, it'll be useless with his Droid X. Perhaps you were thinking of the E11 amp?

The iPod's DAC cannot be bypassed(normally). This is a misconeption. It is encrypted and only 3-4 companies have paid/gotten the encryption codes to bypass it. One famous one is Cypher labs. That is $550 and will bypass the DAC.
the LOD only bypasses the amp.
There will be no problem with using a Droid X, you will just be using 2 amps. Android and other phone's audio parts are usually not nearly as superior as Apple's so that may be a limiting factor to your sound.

Using the Droid X with the E7 and E9 is not recommended. You can't use the E7's DAC with your DroidX, the amp in the E7 is not nearly as good as the E11's($65). The E7 and E9 is strictly a desktop(no phone) setup for use with the PC or other dedicated source.

Yep I understand. I got a very good deal on the E7 and I will be mostly using it on my pc. I will have to see how the E7 sounds plugged directly into the Droid X, using the phones built in amp, and the E7. Alo, if I were to get a cowon C2, how much better would the sound be? And is there a LOD for Cowon DAP's?

The E7's DAC will not be used when used with Droid X. only the amp. i think you know this but in case you don't here.

The Cowon C2 has no official audio specs. but the reviews seem fine for it's audio capabilities. No word on how much it amps but it seems to not have a lot or any noise even at high signal/sound which is good.

The C2 to my knowledge does not have a LOD. you can oonly use the headphone jack and use that to amp it. I don't know what headphones you are using but unless you are using an HD650 or other headphones in that area; You don't "need" an amp to "Drive" it.(From what i am seeing)  You could use an E6 or E11 or PA2V2 to help change the sound a bit and increase the volume if you don't think it's enough. But most audiophiles use amps these days to help change the tone of the sound.(as well as drive it) Flatten that part there. Make that a couple dB higher. Make that less harsh. Etc. It's a bit harder/ not as good/easy to do this with a device with no way to bypass the amp :/

But yes. The E7 will drive whatever well. It is great for use with comptuer. It will work good as an amp with your droid. If you get the Cowon C2. Why not use the E7 as the amp instead of getting another? Do you hvae HD650 or other hard to drive headphones?
If so. The FiiO E11 or PA2V2 is DA ONE FOR U

I just reread ur first post(i do too many threads a day to remember) i see u r getting SRH 940 Studio-refrences :D The E7 should drive those pretty well. No real need for another amp as you don't have very hard to drive headphones.

As u can see now. There is a specific reason why so many audiophiles and Jude himself uses and 160GB Classical ipod :) The amp is cheap to bypass and the DAC can be bypassed if you have the money :) The UI of th ipod is also good. it holds 160GB for only $200...very very popular as you can see. And even if you can't bypass the DAC if you are poor. The wolfson DAC in there is by no means at all a slouch

yeah I am definitely getting the iPod classic once it gets rockboxed. My only problem with ipods is that they cant play flac. I was just looking at the old zunes. They seem nice, theres a 160gb version available too. Only problem is they cant play flac either. But I can convert flac to wma lossless and play that. iPods can do apple lossless. I would convert to alac but my droid cant play that, I think... actually it proably can... I dont know, I prob wont get a new dap anytime soon anyway lol.

A lot of audiophiles, non conforming hipsters whatever try rockbox and talk about how good it is. But from what I see, after the day is over and your pod starts spazzing out and what not. ALAC is fine.
ALAC is the same as FLAC(kinda). They give you full CD ripped quality with a smaller file size with no loss in quality or difference in each. In a perfect world where ever FLAC and ALAC copy comes out correct and free of errors and encoded the right/same way. You won't hear a difference even iwth HD800's. FLAC however has a noticeably smaller file size, and you wouldn't need to re-encode it.

However I do see your point. I'm always all :xf_mad: yelling at it! Why can't YOU BE FLAC! Lolz, but then I calm down and just re-encode

I'm guessing ur not going for Cowon now? And just going for what all the audiophiles do? :) haha

Oh yeah I forgot about alac... lol. I converted my whole library to alac at one point.... then I realized my droid can't play alac -.-. Luckily I had the original files lol.

And yes I can not wait for my srh940 to come. I bought it on amazon used - like new from someone. He is including the receipt in the box for warranty purposes :). The bad thing was he was on vacation and didn't bring the cans with him >:'( So he wouldn't be able to ship it until 10 days later . Its coming this friday... hopefully
