KGSSHV and Buffalo32 v KGSS and Stello 220 MkII

It could be the HV is higher resolution and lower grain or that the Buffalo32 is smoother than the Stello.  If they released the 007 with the new headband I'd be much more inclined to revisit.  That headband was bad for me.  I often thought of punching holes in the elastic since I was riding the metal loop anyway.  But assumed it would hurt resale :p

I am lined up for a Woo GES and 507 in the hopefully near future.  I've also sent some PMs out for a KGSSHV builder but so far no one has the beard for it

The 007 MK1 does most of my music better.  If you're a big prog-rock guy, the LCD-3 is hard to beat.  What are your listening preferences MH?

A lot of rock (Zeppelin, Rush, AC/DC, The Who, Sabbath) to prog rock (Floyd, Genesis, Porcupine Tree). Also a lot of jazz too (Miles Davis, Diana Krall, John Coltrane, etc...) and finally some classical.

The issue I've had with stats (and not limited to headphones) is that while they can sound very quick with great detail, in the end, they seem to lack tonal weight that for me makes them sound "unreal". And over time this really got to me. I've spent a lot of $ on audio gear through the years, but I was never moved enough to go the stat route.

I much prefer the fullness of dynamic or orthodynamic headphones and speakers. YMMV of course.

MH, for the music you listen to (rock), I think I would also take the LCDs over any stax actually, and that's coming from a stax fanboy .

I do love my rock.

But being a former musician (trumpeter), I do love my jazz too.

That's also why I don't think the 009s will be for me. Reminds me that I need to contact Alex about that demo.

I'm classic rock and edm for the most part. I could see stats being fun for my Ambient listening though. Sound from nowhere is what Ambient is about.

There's something about the ortho presentation which makes me prefer rock and edm on orthos over stats if I want a more exciting presentation.

The stats are great and in the right setup they can rock, but I like the immediacy of orthos with bassy 4:4 music, since I want impact over detail.  They're both great choices and I could live with either.  On a good chain, orthos remind me a lot of speakers, which is nice with club music.

Just wondering whether your interest in the Cavalli LL & SR-009 combo has any bearing on your previous (positive) evaluation of the SRM-727II(A) + SR-009, or rather, if it's maybe a case of upgraditis or natural curiosity...

[...] In he current thread, I am more interested about additional impressions of the LL (driving stax headphones rather than lcds if possible), especially in comparison against other amps (stax or not).

Yes it does, yes why not, and yes absolutely! Anything to contribute, we're missing valuable inputs to the thread

Slightly rephrasing my questions, (1) are you still positively impressed by the synergy of the SR-009 and SRM-727II(A) combo? Or (2) are you actively considering an upgrade? Either way, while I do agree that "we're missing valuable inputs to the thread," you have to keep in mind that the Cavalli LL user base is still in its infancy.

1) yes absolutely
2) I would be considering an upgrade for any of my gear if it takes me to the next level. I don't think I can call it upgraditis because it's not like I am unsatisfied (on the contrary, I have lost interest in much of audio gear as of late). But, I have never experienced any other amp than Stax gear so, you know, it gets my imagination running about what I am potentially missing. Oh crap, said this way, it's totally a case of upgraditis, I must be in denial :).

The burning question for me is not just if the LL drives the 009 better but also how much (all very personal so maybe only an audition can tell) because it substential price increase compared to my existing gear.

In summary, I am considering an upgrade but not quite ready to jump in bandwagon until I can get some better feel for what it brings to the table.

Not matter how much we try to deny it, we're all victims of the upgraditis virus, AKA, the "what-if-it-could-sound-better" syndrome. Still, I try to temper those impulses with what you very aptly described as "... not quite ready to jump in bandwagon until I can get some better feel for what it brings to the table." In terms of the LL, and the BHSE as well, I'd add that the SRM-727II could be a more reasonable stopgap solution until we get the rumored Stax SR-009 companion amp. And yes, I know, that could be a long way off...
