If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

Just received the Fitear F111. Upon first listen there is a bit more apparent bass, making it seem just a bit smoother in comparison to the ER4S. Vocals edge very slightly towards warmth compared to the ever so slightly more brittle sounding vocals on the ER4S. It's a small difference but one worth nothing imo. I've only listened to one song so far, but these are the most obvious details to my ears.
are they an deffent upgrade from the er4s and worth the money in your opinion??

They're different from the ER4S, not only in sound but mostly in a less penetrating fit, which will make the price worth it for some.

They don't sound quite as clear (but clearer than anything else I've used) or quite as treble-tilted, which I think is a product of how the mid-range boost was achieved using the titanium acoustic horn, and how it might increase distortion in certain frequencies. That approach might also have a larger effect on fit, I'm not sure. Different tips could change these observations.

I'd love to get these graphed.

Yeah the foam does take a bit of the crisp edge off the bass as well. As for the tips, every ety tip including the silicon mods I've tried all hurt my ears. :-/
I'm using the foam ones that come with my etys and I find these are creating a very good seal and is giving me more bass then the tri tips and I don't find them to soak up as much treble and crispness that the complys do..different material though..and these don't hurt my ears at all..I tried these before and I couldn't really get a good seal with them..maybe I'm getting alot better at inserting these I'm not sure..but I think these tips sound really good.. :)

Do you need a graph to perhaps convince yourself that what you're hearing is actually quite good and possibly better than your ER-4S?

If you want the sound to be as accurate as possible, then you do. If you just want the sound to be colored in some special way that pleases you, then obviously not.

Is your definition of accurate, well, uh, accurate?

Maybe we should start saying accurate to your preferred compensation.

Regardless of what type of compensation you believe is the accurate one, you still need to take a look at measurements to see how the frequency response of a headphone compares to one of the predefined objective accuracy curves. Also, there's obviously more to accuracy than an accurate frequency response - the distortion levels also need to be sufficiently low, the decay needs to be sufficiently fast, square waves needs to have the proper shape, etc.

Not really. After a few more hours with the F111, it could definitely be better than the ER4S in a few areas. I'm just curious to see how it would graph in comparison. They're similar, but definitely different. I'm 100% sure the F111 has more bass in general, including mid-bass. There are other differences in the presentation that I'm not sure how to describe. The F111 seems less "in your head" than the ER4S. I usually hate to use the term sound-stage when describing iems, but there seems to be a difference here. The ER4S is also drier in comparison, which might be part of it, having less decay.

This is a good point. There are a lot of different compensations. I didn't read the paper, but someone summarized that they used a much different set up than the one used by Etymotic, a 7.1 channel setup I think. Seems each one should be important to consider, since people are trying to emulate different listening environments with iems. I do think iems in general need more mids emphasis though, although a bit less than the ER4S would be okay.
