My review of the Hippo Shroom EB
Jul 6, 2010 at 10:10 AM Post #16 of 60
The VB's bigger driver can move more air compared to the smaller driver on EB, when going up to "stupid volume" this can be heard/felt clearly. Also VB can be said to have better build quality, metal vs plastic.

That said, I prefer the Shrooms, both, to the VB.

How long do you think those cables will last?

So are the EB's lacking say in the kick drum department compared to the VB? Since the EB's have smaller driver is the bass thump not as powerfull as the VB's?

I love the VB's and use the 2 dot plate but if these are a no question upgrade I would be tempted.

The bass is not as powerful, especially when the volume gets turned up. If you're addicted to the bass of the VB's chances are you'll find the EB's lacking a little, even if they are nearly identical, just the bigger driver delivers more when asked to.

Thanx, I'll stick with the VB's then as the bass quality is the main reason I bought them.

I just got my pair a couple days ago.. burned in about 35-45 hours. These Shroom EB's are quite a phenomenon. They sound like a cross between my RE0's and TF10's(Null cable upgraded). They really do pack a punch now as I was not very impressed with the original Shrooms and best of all they don't have the killer shrilly highs anymore... I'm enjoying them quite a bit.. =)

Sound sig is quite close, nearly identical.
EB, has more mids/highs detail on low volume, better comfort
VB, has more bass on high volume, better isolation (with foamhybrids)

given the price differential of ~$22 between shroom EB and VB, do you think its better to spend more and get the VB or EB are preferred.

Also how does it compare with Thinksound Rain or Thunder?

Is the bass in EB more like sub-woofer or is it more like mid-bass? How does VB fare in this case?

Sorry for so many questions.

Please opine keeping in mind i was a CX-300 user before and am going to upgrade.

Thanks

If you liked the cx300, go for the VB, the EB will probably lack in the bass quantity. VB with the bass heaviest tuning has a sort of cx300 like sound, and in time it can be tuned down to more natural levels.

Both EB and VB are more sub bass oriented, with very good control and overall detail. EB offers more detail in mids/highs than VB.

EB has better sleeves/tips included, I can't use the included ones on VB, if that matters?

Haven't heard the Thinksounds, so can't compare.

Personally, for $22 difference, I would go for the VB, and pick up some comfortable tips to match.

Can you please describe in detail what is bass quantity?

i can let go of more bass if i am getting a proper bass, you know the one's we hear from powerful subs. I am not sure how to describe it, but lets say bass that has more punch. If i can get the above thing in EB as well as VB, which one then would be to pick?

and you say replace the tips of VB. Will the tips of cx-300 do? If not which other you recommend?

Quantity = the amount. As in the quantity of bass in cx300 is very big, the quality isn't that good though.

If you are used to the bass quantity of the cx300, I think the EB will sound too "thin" for your taste, better opt for the VB which can be tuned to different tastes. Both EB and VB offer very good quality bass, but on higher volumes, the VB will offer more bass quantity with its bigger driver.

The tips of the cx will fit VB, as well as any other tips with the larger fitting.

I used to prefer the Shrooms over the VB, but now I'm not so sure anymore, I may be turning into a basshead...
