Just figured this stunningly beautiful headphone needs it's own thread!

They came out with almost no info available, very limited impressions, and a high price tag with a lot of competition. However, those who took the risk (and the plunge) were greatly rewarded.

This headphone is a work of art, everything from it's 1/4" plug, to the support system looks perfect.

The sound is very intimate, detailed, and has nice bite at all frequencies. The soundstage is very atypical of a closed headphone.

All in all, the gem in my collection!

Will post gratuitous glamour shots soon!

I totally agree with you. sokolov91, How do they sound with your Meier Concerto?

I am enjoying mine right now listening to a DG recording of Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto (Richter, Warsaw Philharmonic). For Classical music lovers, I would highly recommend you use the 3rd movement of this recording as an audition piece for the W1000X. You can download it from the DG website. For those that know this piece well, you will be rewarded.

Glad you started the thread sokolov91, as the W1000X is indeed a beautiful headphone and will attract more attention over time. It is certainly competitive with my HD650 and K701, with each having its own strengths.

I found a very positive review of the them at Headfonia: W1000X Grandioso | Headfonia

I'm still enjoying my pair a lot. Very impressive headphones from AT - my favorite AT of all time.

haha I have been asked that so many times and it kills me to tell yet another person it is STILL not here! I am getting so antsy!

I will be sure to post some impressions here and in my review! I might touch up my review too actually.

maybe skylab will comment as he is lucky enough to have both on hand right now!

Maybe one reason the W1000x never got big attention is that people are waiting for a W5000x or probably something like an AD5000 from AT. I enjoyed the W1000 and i'm sure i'll like the W1000x too, but i'll wait for one of these

Unfortunately I feel that it'll be a while until we get another AT full size woodie. If you look at the history of the wooden series, they used to be released about every year, but recently it has been once every 3 to 4 years. The W5000 was released in 2005 (I think) and the W1000X was only released a few months ago and touted as the 10th generation AT Wooden headphone. Have fun waiting then

W10LTD woody headphone is their 35th Anniversary Limited Product.
W2002 woody headphone is their 40th Anniversary Limited Product.
However, 45th Anniversary Limited Product was phono cartridge.

There is a slight chance (some might even say for sure) that they will introduce new woody closed-back headphone next year for their 50th Anniversary. Maybe W5000X?

I was very tempted to get one after Denon time but Stax is holding me back

How is the bass compared to Denon? If it's in the same class I will definitely get one someday. I already have/had 3 entry level of AT and I'm wondering how their mid-fi are

I think both products are possible, a new AD2000 or a new W5000. Also a wooden 53mm portable is very likely, probably this year. Besides that it's already confirmed that there will be a ATH-M60 soon. A sure fact is that AT releases new headphones _every_ year.
My guess is that, looking at the released dates of the AD2000 and W5000, and seeing their price dropping dramatically in japan, it's extremly likely we will see both or one of them replaced at the end of this or end of next year (Anniversary Products).

I have not tried this combination - I will try to get to that this week, although it's a crazy week for me at work and so not much headphone experimentation time...

Bought them without even trying (didn´t have a chance to) and not regretting. Very comfy and pretty phones with pleasing sound with the music I listen to the most. Thank you Audio-Technica!

Bought these on a whim as well and enjoy them a lot. It's got some quirks that you'll probably either love or hate. First its soundstage isn't particularly wide, maybe because of the angling of the drivers or because of my HDP, which isn't known for its soundstage. It does have great depth and imaging though, with maybe one exception. Cymbals, tambourines, and other instruments in that frequency area tend to sound closer and more forward. The overall headstage is somewhat intimate already, but the high frequency stuff is more noticeable. Other than that, it's a great fun sounding phone with excellent extension on both ends and pretty good detail and speed.
