AFAIK...the clock part needs to be unsoldered (CD7) ...this is a guess since the actual circuit itself is covered with a copper shield (box) with some dampening material glued to the top of that cover. I just got an email from Edwin this past morning saying the clock part is out of stock and he didn't say whether they would be getting anymore. I asked ..hopefully they will have some more on order in the near future otherwise I'll have to spend that money (which isn't much) on something else.
The mods you have selected ...not sure what the change of Hex inverter (74HC04 is a hex converter IIRC) will bring but I'll let you be the judge of that one everything else looks good to me. Try and match the Caddocks as closely as possible (since you are going to this level ).
That is interesting news Curra, do you have to change a few things physically to install the V5 (rather than just popping it in)...would you say the V5 DSP equipped RE1 is now on par with the 840C or is it surpassing it ?
For those that have upgraded the DSP-1 to V5, are you hearing more depth or 3D sound than before? Seems like singers and instruments are more distinct from each other on my Ref-8- I just switched it out from V3.
Yes, definately. It sounds like the musical instruments and voices are suspended in air now. There´s a lot more air between various elements, as if everything came from its own speaker.
Looks like I may be getting that V5 DSP after all (if the clock won't be available anytime soon which means the next 8 weeks or so) although I'll wait a day or two for Edwin to get back to me ...I could spend that money on a couple of replacement laser assemblies for the CD7...hmmm. Finite resources these days...what to do..
On another note I tracked down a 1ppm clock (27 mhz) from DIYHifisupply but I'd like to get my hands on the .5ppm part if I can. These are hard to come by on their own it would seem.
Thanks for the link.......a buddy of mine swapped out the Hex inverter in his Frankenzero...he liked the effect although he couldn't quantify the change beyond a "slight" improvement. I would imagine a swap within the RE1 may yield bigger results...hard to say. I'm certainly waiting in anticipation of the completion of your RE1 mods FD...how far along are you ?

I'm just about to give a finishing touch to my Roc MAX (5x OPA2227 & OCC main supply wires), and as I go along it sounds better and better. But the problem here is that each step you hear or think to hear certain improvement and after a while and after several upgrades you just adapt to them and assume all those improvements are "normal" like they have always been there. PRAT & slam has improved for sure, microdetails and clarity too... but for other changes I should really have stock Roc beside my "reinvention" to be able to judge properly.
As for RE-1... I have parts, I have ideas, but here I'm going to make a "slight" twist&turn... I'm going to turn my RE-1 into RE-7 first (Ta-Da!)... Only if I succeed in that (and after good burn-in) - I will give it your MAX treatment.
At the moment I have many business trips that slow me down in my "endlösung" plans... but do not fear - you'll be posted if, when and how I manage to do it.
The biggest difference between the RE7 and RE1 (IMO anyway) is ACSS stage rev (the RE1 has V1 while the RE7 has V2). Some other less important differences are easily picked out. The RE7 uses fewer mains filter caps (the RE1 has 10 x 3300uf while the RE7 has ? I'm guessing 6 x 4700uf... maybe even higher).
It is difficult to imagine what the units sounded like stock...I was lucky in that I spent a very long time listening to the stock gear so it's burned into my memory ...I also have a very very good auditory memory so that helps.
I stumbled across this today while searching for a .5 ppm clock...scroll down to the RAKK I2S Interface adapter..... http://www.kandkaudio.com/digitalaudio.html If I'm not mistaken the I2S locations for the RE1 and the CD7 can be easily gotten at...has me thinking once again. The cool thing about this kit is the fact that you can use any old HDMI cable you want.

Just be careful not to strip the lesser quality screws/ hex nuts (all metric) as I almost did getting the lid off. The metal on these is pretty soft and easy to strip them.
This new DSP is pretty impressive- another step into the music to my ears.
Hey all, I'll be bringing my CD7 > Furutech BNC cable > Ref 1 (V5) > Silver ACSS cables > Phoenix > balanced / modified D7000's to the NY Fall meet this Saturday:
The meet went very well, thanks! My system was nicely received. I was not induced to buy any new phones or gear after auditioning and comparing lots of new items. Here are a couple of posted quotes from the impressions thread:
Bill's (lmwsjm) Audio GD system was impressive. I liked the idea of the modded Denons. It was a totally different headphone to the Denons I've heard previously, sounding much more light and airy as you would expect. Great job modding. I know if it were me the headphones would have been ruined. Turned them into a totally different headphone though and not at all bassy as the Denons can be. Most people would probably just by a different headphone if they wanted that kind of sound. I salute Bill's ingenuity! Erikzen (meet organizer)
I enjoyed the McIntosh CDP (love that vintage gear), full Audio G-d setup including Phoenix 2 box and amp/dac 2 box. Loved the D7000's with the "holey moley" mod, but I got my 7000's as my only closed headphones, and they are going to stay that way, although the mod did remove the known wobble in bass department. immtbiker
