Lawrence's brand new Zero DAC/AMP burned up my Senn's!!

The bigger issue is customer service. I understand that some devices will be faulty and the option that the suppliers face is that they can either pay the extra money to test the equiptment before they ship out or pay the money to ship you parts (at no cost to you) when you receive a faulty item. In no way is it ok ship faulty items and make the consumer front the bill of QC by shipping back the unit ($40) and wait a month before they get a replacement. In my case Lawrence never even responded with his return shipping address (I have been waiting a month) so I couldn't even have done that if I wanted to.

At least sellers like wsz0304 have proven that they will serve the customer well in the event of a failure.

So... I'm looking for a new DAC because I had two lousy experiences with Lawrence regarding to replacement parts. If I can't get the Zero to work, I'll throw it away because the bad experience with Lawrence is affecting my opinion about the Zero also.

What's next? Beresford, Zhaolu or Citypulse?

Let me know what you get.

I'm not going to go about saying that all Chinese-made gear is crap though, as many good quality products are made in China, and it IS a huge country. Their faults always tend to be making money over producing a quality product in many cases though, but this is universal to even companies in the USA and Europe. Taking Sony as a prime example, I'll never EVER buy one of their products again in my life, as their quality has dropped so incredibly that I'm surprised they are still able to sell anything at all.

Anyway, enough ranting. I could suggest you another DAC, but it's Chinese also (from Audio-gd, where we got our HDAMs). The owner (?) runs them for 100 hours before shipping, so at least you wont get a dud, and you can use your HDAM in it if you already have one.

I once heard a story about Philips. Philips have these Philishaves (I think) and the first batch was made too good. The batteries didn't need no changing etc. They just didn't break down (fast enough). So the second batch was made so that they would break down after 6 months forcing you to get a new one.

What Audio-GD DAC are you talking about BTW?

when I see good deals on ebay gear from china, I think 'sigh - do you want more hassles?'. and then I stop and ctrl+w the page so that the 'buy it now' button is nowhere in sight

there have been things I've wanted to try but I've stopped myself.

until things get better over there, I'm just not into dealing with potential hassles. if they had a local US address for repair and warranty, *that* would make a lot of difference; but all economy is lost once just *one* customer paid shipping needs to be done. and the odds are not low enough to take that risk, quite frankly.

It is definitely a gamble. That's why I think if you are going to buy something from China, you need to research heavily before making the decision. I ordered an iBasso D2 after wanting the D3 because I read that people were having problems with the D3. To me it wasn't worth the risk of having to ship it back, so I went with the lesser model (which I am extremely happy with by the way...can't put the thing down).

I just ordered a Yulong DAC Mark from wsz0304 and it was supposedly shipped a day or so ago, so I'll see how that goes.

Helicopter, sorry to hear about this whole mess. I hope you get your money back. I'll be sure to steer clear of Lawrence's products.

Yes, I'd believe that. My father died before his ancient Philishave did.

I have a PrimaLuna Prolouge 2 Integrated Amplifier that is designed somewhere in Europe, built in a Chinese factory, but the manufacturing is controlled by the designer. I have to say the quality is first rate. I think most products designed and built in China by Chinese owned company's are garbage. They build large quantities with no regard to quality control, and are usually poorly designed. Just my 2 cents.

Well I can speak from experience that the iBasso D2 Boa is fantastic. I believe it was designed in China, and also built there. The unit feels solid, well-built, and sounds great. And as far as price goes, it was a great deal. So saying that ALL Chinese designed and built audio equipment is "garbage" may be going a little too far, but yes, I'm sure there are products that fall into that category.

I didn't say all, I said most. I think DarkVoice is an example of quality Chinese products

I just took a gamble on the Yulong DAH1 Mark, which is in transit right now. I hope it doesn't end up in the garbage category. I've read good things on it, so I have high hopes.

I hope it works out for you.

The reason I'm so down on Chinese products, beside reading all the negative comments here and elsewhere, I have had more than few bad experiences myself with Little Dot. I must say their service is not the problem. David was always responsive. It's their reliability. A 2++ with burned resistors, cold solder joints, lack of care in assembly (scratches and nicks right out of the box) on more than one unit I had. The 2+ I had wasn't even fused, and ran extremely hot. That's asking for a disaster if something shorts. They seem to rush things out without thorough testing and burn-in.

Well,
Pretty disgusting story. I chronicled my recent purchase from LC in the Zero thread. It was perfect. Had I toasted my week old HD650's, I would have bought a plane ticket to Shanghai! I am in the market for another DAC and was going to get another Zero, but it has just been dropped from my list. I probably need to do a little switchup anyhow. I see the Yulong, maybe one of those? Any of you guys have any other suggestions in the around $200-$300 range. No Head amp, just DAC.

On that range the Audio-GD DAC-100 would be my choice.

However, more on the ZERO price/performance level, but probably better constructed you have the MUSILAND SVDAC05, many inputs, looks like a nice unit and should be even better with a few opamp swaps (Audio-GD HDAMs).

Thanx for posting those links! Little extra work on your part!

I'm not sure if you want to do that. LC shipped my Zero from Hong Kong (Cheung Sha Wan postoffice to be exact). I would say there is big chance he lives there also ...
