REVIEW: iBasso D1, Leckerton Audio UHA-3, and Meier Corda Move compared.

I think it is great to have all of the different choices. Quite a change from just a couple of years ago. If it wasn't a niche market then the big guns would come in, flood the market with amps for 59.95 and people would not know what they were missing. True, Sony has made a few high end products as have some others but then the price is sky high, again because that is a niche market, and even those benifit from modification. We can buy amps directly from the maker and normally give and get feedback from them.

Given the cost of the D1 and the improvement that that LM4562 will add, it's definitely worth the cost - chips ordered, thank you for the link!

If the chip replacement makes the D1 sound better, why is iBasso not making the change? I don't mind paying a little extra directly to the manufacturer for this added tweak...

Maybe it's an issue of supply. Newark electronics has been around for ever, if they don't have it, there may be an issue getting them.

And yes, I agree, I'd pay much more to have the analog of a Corda Move merged with the DAC of an iBasso (oh ok, just improve the analog path in the iBasso, merge or no merge). I have a friend with both amps and my experience listening to them was exactly as Skylab described.

Not everything is available in China. This is one reason they put in sockets as they wanted to give people a choice. Tube amps always offer this choice. The B-52, which costs over 5000 dollars sounds better with some good nos tubes over that which comes with the amp, and look at the intitial cost. So you invest a few more dollars and make a choice of what you want to use. Even if it came with some of the chips mentioned here there would be people that might prefer XYB chip but they could also make the change. I have read that iBasso is going to offer some other chips and I am sure they are looking into all of this.

I'm not sure about ordering from the website. I sent them an e-mail after reading Skylab's awesome post (I'd happily send him anything for review, what an outstanding job!) and they said they'll be available in about a week and they've added my name to the list. I'm not sure what that means but if you want one, definitely send them an e-mail.

Thanks for reporting this. I've been too lazy to e-mail them for a status update.

I see.... that makes the D1 very versatile, making it more attractive :) .

Sometimes it's a compromise in cost, sometimes it's availability, and sometimes it's a loss in battery life.

I suppose it might make sense to sell a world class headphone amp with DAC and say, "By the way, it'll also run for 12 hours on battery".

But, if it sounds good enough for 95% of the people and runs 2-3x longer on battery at 10% less cost to build, then that might be what drives their choice of opamps.

Just the fact that they left it upgradable is a big selling point. Because, they can get both markets, the cost/battery life conscious and the audiophiles.

I use a Tekkeon MP3450, which is an external battery that has many uses and runs up to 19 volts. I get many, many hours on my D1 or whatever else I want to run. Yes it makes everthing larger but for many uses I don't care. I can run my D303 as a mobile using the optical out because the D303 will not run off of internal batteries and run the optical out and I really like the optical out of the D303. Or I can run the Monica II forever or. . . . I am going to buy a second one. They also give you an excellent battery power supply vs. wall wart or other possible source of poor electrical supply.

Anyone know an appropriate Digi-Key part # for the socket/adapter that the Brown Dog adapters sit up in? Someone said you can get them at RadioShack, but I wanted to include them on my Digi-Key order.

Of the following, am I right in saying only the LM4562 does not require to be soldered ? The other two require adapters ? I would like to order these, and so if anyone knows what adapters I should get, and where from, I'd appreciate it.

Hey its ok. I don't always like to use search and find that often it takes forever to find what I need and then I may still have questions. Asking a questions is also one way to use search. :^)
